The expectation when trading Sale is that you get back at least one young, talented major league piece with some MLB success and 6 years of control AND THEN a couple prospects like Giolito and Robles AND THEN some spare parts from the low end of the Nationals T30.

I could do without the spare parts. I could do without Giolito (give me Lopez, I dont care). But to me Turner and Robles were both 100% required and not getting them is a deal breaker. Worst year in White Sox history.

If rumors are true this is reminiscent of a slightly better Josh Donaldson trade.

What the heck is Hahn thinking.

Yeah, Giolito will never be as good as Sale himself. That trade would be a disaster.

Cubs can beat that easily. Sale's arm must be about to fall off. This is less than half the price Sale would be worth.

No way they should accept this trade. There's still time to tell Rizzo, Luhnow, Dombrowski to go fuck themselves. If they only want to give up Robles and Giolito they can have Adam Eaton or Jose Quintana.

Hoyer ssid the Cubs don't want to trade with the Sox. Too risky.

If Hahn walks out of this trade without a teams top prospect++ he got taken. For appearances sake alone you need that teams top player.

Going to the season with sale should be looked at as an attractive option by his team

The most likely scenario is that nobody they trade for will ever be as good as sale.

That's because they don't want to do business with the Cubs.

So now we're already being sold on Robles as "a guy who has another year like he just had and he'll be a top prospect." That feels like somebody who should be the third or even fourth piece in a Sale trade, not the co-headliner.

Any hope you may have held that the rest of the deal after Giolito and Robles would be the next 5 best players in the Nats system is evaporating quickly. They are going to get straight up fleeced.

The only way I dont riot in a Nationals trade without Turner is if its like an 8 player deal coming back to the Sox. A 4 player deal that includes only 2 of the Nationals top 10 prospects is a complete worst case scenario...

And they wouldn't need to be if you got three solid startrrs out of the deal, but it looks like they won't even have a chance to do that. This is terrible. If a team told me their top prospect was "untouchable", I'd say, "Then we can't talk about Sale. Are you interested in Quintana?"

Turner isn't a prospect anymore. They are getting the Nats top 2 prospects. The question is, who else are they getting? Have to get some MLB talent. Ross? Espinosa? Both? Then another one or two top 10 prospects. That might be the best they can get.

That would be 3 starters and 2 or 3 top prospects 1 or 2 years out.

That's something that the Nationals would say when making an offer.

As far as I'm concerned there was two ways to do this. Either you take the three best a team has, in this case it'd be Turner, Giolito and Robles, or you forgo their #1 guy and instead get the next 5 or 6 best prospects (or 5 or 6 you like the best). The quantity route makes sense, I expect a guy or two to get hurt or bust but enough of them pan out overall that it helps the team within the next couple years. And who knows, when you add that many guys maybe you get really lucky with one. Your odds of getting a special player like that increase the more players you get.

But as reported it is a 3 (maybe 4)-for-one swap that doesn't even include the Nationals best guy. I'm in a position where I hope that the centerpiece of this return becomes what Sale already is (I'm mad just thinking about this) and that the next guy, with his 41 career games at High-A, doesn't fall off the face of the earth in the minors or get hurt. The rest is just garbage that barely even provides organizational depth.

I'm so pissed off about this I'm going to have trouble sleeping.

How come no team in baseball will offer their best prospect for Sale?

Turner is a guy who hasn't played a single full big league season. Sale is one of the best five starters in baseball at about half the price of the other four for the next three seasons. If Turner is too much to give up I'd keep Sale.

Sale would join NL Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer to form baseball best righty-lefty rotation tandem in baseball

Lester and Hendricks disagree.
