It's a fact. There are far less balls in play than ever. So obviously fielding is less important than ever.

Frank Thomas and Edgar Martinez needed to be in the field to justify the hype around them apparently.

The fact that they both were shitty defenders puts them in a category below the true all around greats of the game.

Bull crap. First base is not an easy position to play. Outfield is a much easier position to play. A good first baseman saves runs and makes outs. Outfield, and particularly left field is the easiest position to play on the field.

You think center field is easier to play than first base?

No. But left field certainly is and so really is right field which really is given to the guy with the best arm in the outfield. Do you think that first base is an easy position to play? Think for a second before you answer that. I think that first base is a very undervalued position because of the number of plays that the guy makes that influence a game. Think about it. How many plays does a right fielder have in a given game and contrast that with how many plays a first baseman makes? Its probably around eight to ten times more for a given game.

Left field and first base are interchangable imo.. that's where you hide a butchers.

No. Not first base. One of the weaknesses of the Sox right now is first base defensively. They have no one who is good at the position.. I think part of it is because of the juiced baseball and how deep infielders have to play thereby making more off base throws to first. The ability of a first baseman to field errant throws has been very undervalued.

First base defense means dick in the grand scheme of things, Eloy, Abreu..both butchers.. but if the pitching was decent, they'd win 85-90 games.

I'm not worried about the Sox meathead, I'll be worried about the Sox when they can put together two seasons in a row of 90 plus wins.

Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez (ankle) will need to have a rehab assignment before returning to the big league roster. The team wants Jimenez to get in some at-bats in the minors before letting him return to the team. He's been out since April 26 due to a sprained ankle. It's unclear when Jimenez will return, but this weekend is a possibility.

This is at least mildly encouraging.

They can't really play this guy in the outfield. He makes Schwarber look like Alex Gordon out there.

You know, people talk a lot of shit about their athletic abilities, blah, blah, blah. And even the worst guy in the big leagues is still a professional and more athletic than anyone you ever met. Jimenez is honestly the only guy I've ever seen in the major leagues where I actually think I could have played the outfield better than he does when I was in my 20s. I wouldn't say that about Palka. I wouldn't say it about anyone else I've ever seen.

White Sox fan hating a former Cub.

I thought he was supposed to be more than adequate on the corners and maybe you could even get away with him in center in a pinch. I'm not sure the guy can even play first base.

He won’t play first base or DH. I was assured by people on these pages that he would stick as an outfielder. Case closed. He’s not moving to first base.

Nope. Especially in this age of the juiced baseball and the fact that infielders must take defensive positions farther away from first base because of the speed of the ball coming to them, more bad throws to first base are occurring. The ability of a first baseman to dig out bad throws as well as participate in the many shifts that defensive players need to play now requires a lot more athleticism on the part of a first baseman. And the White Sox are suffering because of the defensive weakness in their first basemen right now.

Bullshit. Obviously you do not know shit about the game of baseball. First base right now is a valued defensive position and is a weakness of this team.

If this is true, then Theo may have sold the White Sox a bad bill of goods. You can find slugging but shitty defending outfielders anywhere. Let's hope Cease makes it as a decent MLB starter or this trade isn't looking good for the Sox

Funny shit. He's a baby for cripes sake. He is very athletic and is learning at the major league level. HE also has a great arm. The tools are all there. The kid is going to be awesome. When people start talking about Jimenez being the worst fielder in all of baseball with the small sample set that they have seen, they obviously do not understand anything about the growth curve for a major league player.

As for his injury, it was a stupid thing for him to do namely trying to climb that fence. I chalk that up to youth. YOu do not do that unless you've practiced it quite a bit in the ball park that you are playing in. Obviously he hadn't done that. Fortunately he didn't break his leg in the process.
I think that the Sox better give him a crash course in how and what to do defensively. It looks to me that he wants to show boat and they are trying to get him away from that. It happens a lot with Hispanic players from poor countries and it looks like he has a lot of hot dog in him.
I look at him and then I think about Moncada and how many people wanted to give up on him also. A young kid with terrific tools learning at the major league level. Now he is a stud and will be for many many years. I predict the same thing for Jimenez as long as he doesn't go the Puig route as a player and let ego take over.

Hey man, like I said, I always thought he was decent(fielding) in the minors, unless you had possible PED abuse muscle tears/etc. He used to run like the wind as I recall.

No argument there... but realistically I don't think a guy who is 6'5 can hold up at third base long term in the MLB, physically. It's why Baez is going to get the big payday.

Yeah, 6'5" is huge for a 3B guy. A helluva lot of plays at 3rd involve diving for baseballs and requires very quick reactions. I don't think that is his future. I remember when Derrick Lee was coming up in the Pads organization. They had him at 3rd and he was TERRIBLE in high A. It was obvious to me that his future was going to be at either 1st base or left field going forward.
