I don't know the numbers, but this was a different time in baseball. WAR and even OPS were not widely used by fans in the mid-90s. Grace was a "gamer' and "clutch". Frank Thomas was whiny, not a leader, a clutch hitter or a complete player. He walked too much and clogged the bases. He did not put the ball in play. There was a decent percentage of the Cubs fandom that thought this way. It was a topic on the Score every city series.
