Avi will never have the career Heyward has had. Avi will never sniff that salary or the total performance.

There are a lot of metrics that say it is though. I believe right fielders handle about 1.5 "balls in zone" per game. Out of those 1.5 opportunites how much better is the best guy from the worst? Even if we say that a guy like Heyward is so premium that he gets to some balls out of his zone, I really don't think it's as significant as you suggest.

In any one game it may be insignificant. Over the course of the season the value Heyward proves in the field would become apparent. Avi's still pretty bad out there and Heyward is awesome. It's a huge disparity. Avi would have to be significantly better at the plate to make up for it.

There may be a huge disparity in ability but there's a lot to suggest there isn't a huge disparity in results. But the value of defense on the outfield corners has been debated for awhile now. There are all kinds of opinions and every opinion has stats to support it.

Here's a conversation I had the other day. Would you rather play with 9 Starlin Castros or 9 Kevin Kiermaiers? I'm going with the Castros.

Alright guys lets be reasonable. I think Avi is gonna have a career year at the plate and I'd like to keep him around, but RF defense isn't insignificant. Heyward is the better player and will continue to be. He just won't be as good a hitter.
