Albet Belle had two of the most prolific offensive seasons in White Sox history.

Jermiane Dye, Ben Wallace, Paul Konerko, Adam Dunn, Adam LaRoche. Not saying they all worked, but he signed them.

He also extended Jimmy Butler, Konerko & Dye, Mark Buehrle.

Dye was signed as a "show me" contract
AJ was signed after being released by the Giants after punching a teammate in the noots

Konerko was traded for Cameron, you know that.

I'm assuming " big free agents" means highly sought... Dunn and Laroche

Indeed. After the most dominant playoff run in MLB history, 2005, he was a free agent and resigned with the Sox. He was extended after 2010 as well.

Overpaying doesn't make you competitive.

I haven't said the word overpaying once

So what players has Jerry had the chance to get and was cheap? In basketball he tried to get everyone and foolishly spent on a couple of people. I baseball he has been aggressive when he had a shot. He gave out the highest contract ever at one point in both sports. It has been 2 decades and no NBA player has gotten paid more than MJ.

What big free agents has Reinsdorf signed since the Albert Belle disaster twenty years ago?

I don't even need to go back 20 years. I can focus on the last 5+ years.

Wasted $60M on Ben Wallace chasing a championship
Gave max money to Boozer after failing to get Miami's big 3
Gave Dunn a big deal
Gave LaRoche a big deal
Wasted $50M on Wade

Doesn't the NBA have a salary floor?

That was an issue during the Tim Floyd era.

Boozer didn't think get a max deal and Wade didn't get $50 million. The fact that you think the Dunn and laroche contracts were "big deals" proves my point for me

Boozer did get a max deal. He just couldn't get the extra year because he changed teams.

It was a 5 year $75 million deal. A max deal back then would've been worth $90 million or more

Dunn and LaRoche were big deals. The players sucked, but spending $70million on 2 guys is big.

Cmon Frank. A 2 year $25 million deal is NOT a big deal

Were AJ or Dye ever an all-star before being signed? Dunn was one time I believe. Abreu was a Havana White Sox signing. Had a good first year and nothing really memorable since.

Don't know much about LaRoache other than he was well past his prime when he was here. Was he ever an all-star?

The other team always gets guys like Lester while the Sox get LaRoache. They get Soriano while the Sox get nobody comparable. Aside from Fisk, Luzinski, and Belle the Terrible I can't think of a single free agent signing that was exciting for the White Sox. Maybe I'll throw in resigning Konerko.

Dunn was a moderately big deal. LaRoache was a snooze fest that made page 3 in local papers.

Dye was a hell of a player 4-5 years before the Sox signed him, he was a juicer that raked..he signed for chump change here though. Laroche has always sucked his whole career.

This is correct. Having watched him here Hahn and Kenny could have called me and I would have told them stay away.

That Alex Rios waiver claim was a "shrewd" move!

I don't care what they gave him. He was never a signing that would have made the front page of the paper and made people say "The Sox are serious." Had they signed Clemens at the same time that would have been a big free agent signing. He only went on to win 4 or 5 Cy Young awards after that.

Navarro was never even an all-star.

I looked it up and was surprised the Dye was only a one time all star (and gold glove winner) before the Sox. He had some great but not all star years between the ages of 25-27.

AJ was a one time all star before the Sox as well. The Twins seemed to have a string of highly productive catchers who were just below all star level during that era.

I checked on Dye this morning. He was five years removed from his only all-star appearance when he signed with the White Sox.

Even in the 80s the Twins seemed to have good young catchers.
