Typical Jerry signing.

How could you guys forget such mega stars as Jose Canseco, Ken Griffey Jr, and Manny Ramirez? That's like 1500+ career homers.

And about 10 of those HR's came with the White Sox.

It's the intent that matters, not the results.

They gave him $20M.

I don't care what they gave him. He was never a signing that would have made the front page of the paper and made people say "The Sox are serious." Had they signed Clemens at the same time that would have been a big free agent signing. He only went on to win 4 or 5 Cy Young awards after that.

Navarro was never even an all-star.

You can't argue that they never spend money and then dismiss who they spent money on.

When discussing the new Robert or Navarro etc. why do people care how Jerry spends his money? Front office can make a bad judgement but Jerry and his money should be of no concern to anyone. He has shown he will spend when his people come ask him for it.

Exactly! He acquired teams that had never won or hadn't won in 60+ years and brought 7 titles to Chicago in 24 years.

I never argued they never spend money. Go back and read. I argued they never signed big time free agents. You can't change a person's original point to fit into your answer.

I'm not sure why you keep bringing the Bulls into this discussion. I'm not sure about the rest of those on the board but I could care less about basketball and it's irrelevant to a baseball discussion.

He brought one championship to the White Sox in 30+ years of ownership when that's what he should have mathematically done.

He cost the White Sox a very good chance at a championship in 1994.

He's never made the post-season in back to back years. Only five post season appearances in 37 years in the third largest market in a sport without a salary cap.

Pathetic.

The Sox have been competitive most of the time he's owned the team. He won a championship in 24 years for a team that hadn't won a title in nearly 65 years before he arrived. He did it WITHOUT the services of arguably the greatest right handed hitter ever.

The Bulls are relevant because this debate has been about Uncle Jerry not spending money for either team.

That ownership before Reinsdorf arrived was equally inept doesn't absolve him of ineptitude.

Since Reinsdorf bought the team:

Cleveland - 9 playoff appearances, three World Series appearances
Minnesota - 8 playoff appearances, two World Series wins
Detroit - 7 playoff appearances, three World Series appearances, one World Series win
Kansas City - 5 playoff appearances, three World Series appearances, two World Series wins

(Let's look at their old division members as well)

Oakland - 13 playoff appearances (Oakland!), three World Series appearances, one World Series win
Texas - 8 playoff appearances, two World Series appearances
Seattle - 4 playoff appearances

White Sox - 5 playoff appearances (never back to back), one (one!!!!!!!) World Series appearance, one World Series win

They are not even competitive in their own division.

They are Seattle plus one World Series 12 years (and counting) ago.

Pathetic.

(The Bulls aren't relevant because it's a different (stupid, boring) game with a salary cap.)

Which of those teams went out and got high prices free agents to win?

I'm not sure what the question is. Are you conceding the White Sox are not really competitive with the rest of their league since Reinsdorf has owned the team? That the Reinsdorf White Sox are the same as Baltimore and Seattle?

Most of them didn't. Detroit certainly did. Minnesota and Kansas City certainly did not.

He's gonna be on every top 100 list. Law will follow suit and copy others smarter than him and put Robert on his list too.

Here's why I hate the White Sox

I had something else in mind for the newsletter today, but can I just rant for a bit about how petty and childish the reactions of a small number of White Sox fans were to my comments on the Luis Robert signing yesterday?

I appeared on the Waddle & Silvy program on ESPN Chicago yesterday to talk about Robert, and my Insider piece on the signing and the history of Cuban position players in general went up this afternoon. In both places, I gave the same info: I've spoken to multiple scouts and executives about Robert and found a quick and unusual consensus on his strengths and weaknesses, including the risk around his hit tool. I thought on balance it was a favorable commentary on the player - I still haven't seen Robert, but will go see him in June if he's assigned to Kannapolis or Winston-Salem - albeit not as positive as what I think MLB.com and Baseball America have written (two sources I respect).

Forum-shopping among fans is hardly new, but the level of vitriol on this one, which is still ongoing, is certainly a new high, and I wonder if this is a sign of the times and of what staying active on Twitter will be like going forward. Many of you likely saw the Sox fan who fabricated a bunch of comments from me and tweeted them, claiming I called Robert a .220 hitter (really, when have you ever heard me call a player that?), but there have been plenty of others whining that I slammed the signing (no) or said the player wasn't good (no) or that I was a big meanie monster to their favorite team. Good grief.
