And he wonders why his show is losing to Waddle & Silvy.

Rodon threw a simulated game of ~60 pitches yesterday. Petricka and Jones also threw an inning of relief in said game.

I doubt the Sox would have him pitching like that if he needed surgery.

Sounds like they are just being cautious. No reason to rush him back until he's ready.

I hope that's the case, but how many times have we heard of a sports doctor saying something like, "You can undergo surgery or you can rehab this way and avoid the surgery", and ultimately the guy winds up needing the surgery anyway?

Yep, I have a funny feeling this is the case and the last thing Boras wants is for Rodon to go under the knife.

Rodon is currently scheduled to make a rehab start with Winston-Salem (A) on Tuesday.

On a related note, James Shields threw a rehab start for Charlotte (AAA) yesterday, and gave up one run over four innings.

Probably no point to pitching him further. He can rest till next year while another prospect gets a tryout.

Would anyone be shocked to hear he will need surgery in the off season?

To realize that Bere had a better career by far is depressing

But I do agree this Rodon thing smells like an attempt to avoid surgery that will waste a season with Rodon eventually undergoing the knife anyway.

Post subject:  Re: Bernstein's Rodon Conspiracy Theory

I doubt he throws a pitch in 2018, if ever.

Look the Sox are loaded with starters. Right now they could run a Giolito/Kopech/Lopez 1-2-3 and there is more than enough potential for that to be a good playoff rotation. The innings are there for those guys. They are ready for a full workload. After that its a little murkier, but there are good FA options out there that make sense for the Sox and the Hansen/Dunning wave will be upon them by midseason if they are really desperate. I'm intrigued by Fulmer too, maybe he's been fixed? We'll see.

The move to reliever may be the best option for Rodon. He can throw all the sliders he wants if it just in 1-2 inning spurts. I dont think he has the makeup to close, but you combine the staff they will have going with a Andrew Miller-like fireman (admittedly best care scenario, but Rodon has that kind of talent) and it'll be great. Burdi is gonna miss 2018, which sucks, but long-term he's still my favorite option to close games. Cease can be up as soon as the ASB next year if its in a relief role, so that's another reliever with massive stuff...Rodon is kind of a luxury at this point. If he had any value at all they'd probably look into trading him.

I know I'm probably biased, but I think I'd go the Cubs route and draft position players. Pitcher arms are so volatile, and I can't imagine there's a legit way to predict shit like this.

Post subject:  Re: Bernstein's Rodon Conspiracy Theory

It was the right pick. They just couldn't overcome the damage done to him at NC State, but it made sense to try with Cooper/Schneider. The upside was stupendous, you even saw it while he was clearly injured. Brady Aiken is KIA, Kolek is MIA, Freeland's shoulder is fucked up too, Hoffman came pre-injured and its not like any of the position players before Conforto are worth anything really.

I still dont think Rodon's career is over btw, its just going to have to change. The dreams of having an ace lefty to replace Sale are completely dead.

Agree. He could become a decent reliever but the RODON. STUD. WORLD SERIES dreams are finished.
