The White Sox have hired Omar Vizquel as the manager of their A-ball affiliate in Winston-Salem, according to Venezuelan reporter Efrain Zavarace on Twitter (hat tip to MLive.com’s Evan Woodbery). This will be Vizquel’s first managerial assignment after four seasons as the Tigers’ first base coach and one year as an infield coach with the Angels. He has often been mentioned as a potential managerial candidate in the big leagues, and Vizquel interviewed for the Tigers’ dugout vacancy earlier this offseason.

I dont know how he'll be at coaching but Vizquel is one of the true pros so I like having around just for that. Cool hire.

Is this where Robert will be starting the season?

"Beef" Welington Castillo signed to a 2 year deal with a 3rd year option. $15M guaranteed.

Adding pop, Abreu deal in place? Either way, if he performs as usual, great flip for a decent prospect at the break signing. Would have real value.

Like the move. Allows them to develop Collins slowly.

He's a solid offensive catcher, but it is probably not coincidence that no team wants to keep him and pitching staffs tend to pitch worse when he is behind the plate. May not help with the young pitchers the Sox will be putting out there the next couple years.

Castillo/Narvaez is fine by me to open the season. Need to get a 3b and lh starter now.

I don't see why they couldn't continue with Smith and Narvaez. They may not be the answer but they were the answer for the moment.

You let Castillo catch the older guys and one of the other two catch the young guys.

Castillo can also play some 1B if you have to pinch run for Abreu.

castillo has a little more power (or at least did last season). plus, he can throw out runners trying to steal. narvaez and smith can't really do that.

I understand that Castillo is a better player than either of those guys today. I am under the assumption they are still in player development mode to find that diamond in the rough. Both of those catchers had nice rookie seasons (even though I know Smith is hardly a "prospect" at this age). I think I would have rolled with two guys who showed something and cost pennies while spending the money on bullpen.

From what I have read (not much), Castillo will put up some power numbers, but shouldn't their focus be on adding a catcher (if they weren't already comfortable with their current in-house options) who can help young pitchers develop? Seems like the type of move made to complement a strong(er) defensive catcher when the team is a bit further ahead in it's development, not when they are probably 2 years away.

The Sox are involved in a 3 team trade with the Dodgers and Royals. Looks like it could be a big one.

Why do I get the feeling Matt Kemp may be coming here?

I have the same feeling. Hopefully Shields is on his way out.

Shit is that worth it?

Shields sucks but what's Kemp's contract look like?

Well nevermind.

The final accounting of this three-team trade: Royals sending Scott Alexander to the Dodgers and Joakim Soria to the White Sox; they're receiving right-hander Trevor Oaks and infielder Erick Mejia from Dodgers.

Post subject:  Re: OFFSEASON--rebuild OVER--winning time NOW

It’s bad so the Dodgers would have to include a prospect.

Doesn’t matter because it doesn’t look to be all that big. They traded Jake Peter for Joekim Soria and a minor leaguer.

Post subject:  Re: OFFSEASON--rebuild OVER--winning time NOW

Complete deal: Left-handed reliever Scott Alexander and Triple A infielder Jake Peter to #Dodgers; right-handed relievers Luis Avilan and Joakim Soria and cash to #WhiteSox; RHP Trevor Oaks and minor-league infielder Erick Mejia to #Royals.

Though they did also get 3 million dollars from Los Angeles.

Uncle Jerry loves him some cash considerations.

Two decent relievers for nothing? Great deal. They can flip them later.
