Today's starting pitchers are being asked to go maybe 5 innings in the playoffs. Matchups out of the bullpen are already being played out in the 5th and 6th inning sometimes. We have seen starters come trotting out of the pen in non-elimination games.

Meanwhile, Ozzie Guillen just sat back and let his horses run the race. Now, its a bit easier to pitch when Paul Konerko hits a HR before the starter even throws a pitch, but nevertheless there were still 27 outs to cover and the starters indeed covered them all. Four times in a row. That feat is legendary. I do not believe those games get the historical due and praise that they deserve. Clearly it is something we will never see again in our lifetimes.

It was a joy to watch Hendricks, Scherzer, and Strasburg (twice) mow guys down with seemingly very little effort. Strasburg's change up was pretty much an un-hittable pitch yesterday. Manager's don't matter until they do. Stop dicking around and if a guy gets on base, let your starter figure out a way to get out of the inning.

2005.

11-1. Even the best postseason team ever had a small speedbump.

Not even the best White Sox team. 1917 was better.

76 Reds won 103 and went 7-0 in post season

1939 Yankees might be the best ever though.

No. Buehrle comes out and pitches the 10th, and Iguchi hits a walk-off homer.

Cry more.

This is not the place to debate the best playoff team of the modern era. Besides, at worst, the White Sox are 1B to the Yankees 1A.

This is a thread to marvel at a feat of starting pitching that we will never see again.

The 2005 White Sox played Major League Baseball closer to perfection for an entire season than any team has this century.

Not to mention Contreras went 8.1 innings in Game 1.

Cotts pitched .2 innings and that was it for the bullpen all series. It is definitely legendary.

But I think it can be done again. Whenever the medical science catches up to what is injuring players the pendulum will swing back to starters. Maybe 10 years, maybe 50...but eventually they'll crack the done on pitcher longevity.

Favorite defensive play (besides the ninth inning of Game Four of the Word Series): Tad throwing to third.

1939 Yankees might be the best ever though.

1927 Yankees

In the 1927 World Series, the New York Yankees swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in four games. This was the first sweep of a National League team by an American League team.

That year, the Yankees led the American League in runs scored, hits, triples, home runs, base on balls, batting average, slugging average and on-base percentage. It featured legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig at their peaks. The team won a then-league record 110 games, finished with a 19-game lead over second place, and are considered by many to be the greatest team in the history of baseball.

The 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates, with MVP Paul Waner, led the National League in runs, hits, batting average and on-base percentage.

ignoring the snark, this is a legit question. Did the amount of work on the arms in 2005 affect 2006? Bullpens are good and useful.

The bullpen is what killed them. Cotts sucked and Politte and Hermanson's careers were over. That and no Rowand and too much Vazquez.
