In his defense they traded him for James Shields who already was a horrible pitcher at the time. If they would have traded the peanut vendor for James Shields it would have been a bad trade.

Tatis does hurt, but if memory serves, he was not even in their top 30 at the time of the trade. That was more dumb luck for the Padres and shitty luck for the Sox than some sort of shrewd Padres move.

He wasn’t considered to be a top 30 IFA when he signed, but I read a scouting report from the time period that threw out the possibility of massive upside based on significant physical maturation, which you can say for countless other teenage prospects, I suppose.

If I were the GM, I’d have parted with a more finished product - someone with at least a few years in the minors w/ respectable upside. With a 17 year old Tatis, you have absolutely no clue what you have. You set yourselves up to look like epic retards.
