Sox had a good defensive catcher who handled a staff nicely, maybe even great, and Jerry wouldn't pay him. Team was bounced in the first round and the staff had an 8 ERA.

Sox were a Mc Cann away from a world series last year

I don't think it was that simple.

Maybe....maybe not. We'll never know. Pitchers numbers with McCann were noticeably better. I said in 2020....deal Grandal and keep McCann.

Grandal is a very valuable piece. He's one of the few guys on the team that takes walks and gets on base. He's important for the long season. I don't think that McCann makes a difference vs. the Astros.

oof, that's a rough thought

Mets would have gladly gotten out of that contract for a bag of balls.

I was being sarcastic. No, the Sox were not a Mccann away from a World Series and Grandal's .939 OPS certainly made up for any deficiencies he had.

the mets like to overpay, I get that.
McCann played himself into being overpaid....it was a fluke...I also get that.

My logic is and was, I value defense at Catcher #1 on the field. McCann was all of that. Grandal is a very good hitter. He takes a lot of pitches...he walks....lots of value there. I simply HATE him at Catcher and I hate having to rely on Leury as a starter. There are worse contracts than $10 million a year for McCann....but yes, he's overpaid and likely wouldn't have advanced the Sox over Houston.

Ah, the vaunted .939 OPS. The man went to the plate looking for a walk. And pitching, as it is, accommodated him. I mean, that's fine and good and everything, but it's kinda pathetic. It says more about the state of baseball than Yasmani Grandal.

I guess you aren’t a Frank Thomas fan.

Frank Thomas took walks, he didn't look for them.

He also said if he played now, he would be like Grandal. He annoys me as a catcher, but I love his offensive game. Get on base by any means necessary. And if they throw strikes, hit it out.

No doubt there's a large swath of fans who love Grandal's offensive game. It's also why there is no longer a larger swath of fans in general.

If MLB had pitchers instead of throwers, Grandal wouldn't be a millionaire. The game itself has made Grandal. It's not something he has done, it's something he's has taken advantage of. When looking for walks is a thing, then shit is off course.

I don't blame Grandal for the style of play. I believe he adjusted to take advantage of tit.

I don't blame him either. I just didn't enjoy his career year. It was not a mirage but it sure felt like one. I'm sitting there, as a White Sox fan, irritated that the opposing "thrower" is walking a .180 hitter on 5 pitches.

What's interesting about Grandal is that he raised his average to .240 by the end of the year. And that's his career batting average.

Yes breast milk is certainly part of a proper MLB diet.
