Can make the argument that C should be a top priority in the offseason. Both options they have now are bad offensively AND defensively. However, catchers are hard to find. Pretty much every list has Contreras as the top free agent available, and he'll probably get more money than Jerry would spend.

Not arguing that LaRussa isn’t a disaster but everyone knew all season long the schedule would be the easiest in baseball in September. This does not make Cairo a genius. Everyone knew they would do better in September. They would probably be the same with LaRussa. Their September success is a function of strength of schedule, not change of manager.

That said, if there has ever been a team in need of a change of manager it is this team and it could have helped earlier. I don’t think this guy Cairo is the guy.
