Look, no Sox announcers were worse than Gary Thorne or Jim Durham. Benetti ain't even close.

Thorne is actually pretty good with the Orioles, but he has a lot more experience doing baseball now and he has Jim Palmer as his analyst.

Dave Wills does a really good broadcast, but one that is analyst-free because the other guy (Andy Freed) is a PBP guy and not an ex-player. After about a decade of that, I'm not sure how he'd put up with having to have either Stone or Farmio sitting next to him yammering away. Plus Wills is under no pressure in Tampa because I think more people listen to the broadcast on XM or MLB At Bat than actually listen from Tampa itself on the radio.

If I'm Wills, even if I love the Sox and living in Chicago, it would take a huge offer for me to move from Tampa. I know Tampa is a soulless type of city populated by people avoiding something but you can buy yourself a nice home near a beautiful beach in that city for PBP money.

He has flaws, but this could be much, much worse. Benetti is fine with me.

Even like with Clint occasionally talking to an empty chair, it's still accurate & better.

There is an odd sexual tension with this guy and stoney.
That being said I can finally watch a game and not hear the bullshit that weird old fuck spews constantly.

Upon further review this guy is a fucking geek.

Hawk and Wimpy is more entertaining. At least the old stories are usually unintentionally funny and have personality.

Hawk and Wimpy was a good broadcast.

That was a great listen.

For sure. The high point of Sox broadcasts post Harry & Jimmy...

Just flipped on the TCU vs Texas Tech game and Benetti is doing the play by play. Gotta give him credit. He's a worker.

Now he's doing the Tennessee vs Arkansas game with Big Ben McDonald on the SEC Network. He's definitely a worker.

He does college basketball, as well.

At the risk of irritating Cubs fans in a presumably White Sox forum, I listened to Ron Coomer for the 1st extended time today and was stunned by how bad he is. I actually think the other 3 (TV and Pat H) are very good but that was quite a drop-off.

Coomer is not very good. Troy Murray used to be not very good with the Blackhawks but grew into his role very well (I'd say one of the best at being critical of his team), so maybe there's hope, but it probably would have happened by now. Santo was "bad" but it was shtick. Coomer just falls short of what major-market radio deserves.

Coomer has gotten better, which says something.

Two of the best two man radio booths I have heard for MLB are the Mets (Howie Rose and Josh Lewin) and the Rays (ex-South Sider Dave Wills and Andy Freed). None of them played in the majors (Wills played in college) and that doesn't hurt either broadcast. The other night, Wills was beating up on the Rays starter for consistently not throwing strikes.
