This is LTG. I had Jorr deactivate the account so I logged in under another name.

I know its sort of fashionable to diss tanking around here but tanking works. I always has and always will. The Bulls have 6 rings due to tanking.

Here is the proof.

I think I went to a couple of those games later in the season when the Stadium was almost empty.

Yup. He'd win at least 9.

That isn't proof they tanked.

I loved Reggie but I think he was deep into that culture the Jordan described in The Last Dance that was present when he arrived.

But back to OP, tanking definitely works. Probably more in the NBA than anywhere else, where you typically can’t win a title without an all time great (or two) on the roster.

But it absolutely sucks in real time and makes watching the game a miserable experience.

I know you are an anti tank guy so figured it was time to debunk this pernicious myth once and for all.

Quote:
Of course, the Bulls had a terrible season—they were 21-28 before dealing Theus and 6-27 after. That put them into the third spot in the 1984 draft, which turned out to be the spot at which they drafted a shooting guard out of North Carolina named Michael Jordan, changing the future of the franchise (and the league) forever.

Players now treat the NBA like AAU. After a few years they leave to join with a different groups of friends. Free agency and forcing trades is the new tanking.

Not sure I'd call blowing up a team that wasn't going anywhere half way through the year tanking, but wouldn't really care if someone else did.

Bu can he still beat LaVar? That’s all that matters.

After all, LaVar said he’d just back MJ down into the post and deliver sky hooks.

Tanking involves intentionally losing for 1, but most likely more than 1 season in order to be good some point in the future. Trading away your best player during the season when you've proven you aren't going to be good this year is not tanking.

Can we get a confirmation on this?

That's a weird definition you have cultivated in an attempt to isolate Theo as the tanker in chief

Tanking: Not trying to win as much as possible because it helps your draft position

Its that simple. If the Bulls reason for trading Theus inuded any reasoning about the draft, it was tanking.

After the 1984 coin flip, which was won by the Houston Rockets, the NBA introduced the lottery system to counter the accusations that the Rockets and several other teams were deliberately losing their regular season games in order to secure the worst record and consequently the chance to obtain the first pick.[2][3] The lottery system involved a random drawing of an envelope from a hopper. Inside each of the envelopes was the name of a non-playoff team. The team whose envelope was drawn first would get the first pick. The process was then repeated until the rest of the lottery picks were determined. In this system, each non-playoff team had an equal chance to obtain the first pick. The rest of the first-round picks were determined in reverse order of the win-loss record.[4]

Yeah I’d think that intentionally making a bad team worse fits the bill.

Your definition of tanking is just as weird. Any trade no matter what that will have even a short term loss in expected wins, in this case 33 games of an 82 game season, is tanking. The Bulls were 21-28. They weren't going to win that year.

I don't view a trade deadline deal in a season where you aren't winning while trying to win as tanking.

No, it's not. It's the widely accepted and logical definition.

If you're trying to win every game you are not tanking

If you don't mind losing because it improves your draft position, its tanking. And most often it's just a one year thing targeting a certain player.

What type of voodoo math are you using Brick? They were 27-55 that year and your conception of tanking is rather skewed to put it lightly.

You also contradict yourself by stating that they " weren't going to win that year".

This is all the more reason that I know I am correct about this.
