Noah continues to piss me off with his general presence.

re: Hinrich, exactly.
re: Noah, say what you will about his appearance and his temper tantrums, but - in an admittedly totally meatball sense - I really admire the effort he puts in every game. As discussed with friends when watching last night's game, Noah was the one guy to come out last season and say, "we suck, we're not working, we need to try harder, et c." I know he got a lot of grief over that comment, coming as it did late in the season, and at a time when a lot of people were still harboring the same doubts about him that they had when he was drafted (I'll never forget watching the 07 draft @ ESPN Zone, and all the boos and catcalls that erupted from the assembled crowd when Noah's name was announced), but dude clearly loves the game and by the most unfortunate + base level of judgment most people have for NBA players, he hasn't really done or said anything monumentally stupid so as to distract from his play on the court.

That said, will he ever match up well against the elite young big men of the East (Howard, Horford)? Probably not. My hope is that if Tyrus Thomas truly comes into his own, Thomas can handle the more physical/traditional PF role with Noah playing "deputy" in the key and drawing fouls on high percentage shots. I wish he were more assertive on the boards, but I think a lot of that stuff comes with time and confidence, in which case, given the minutes, this could be his year.

also, re the above, the hypothetical '07 Bulls practice session we envisioned went as follows:

Court 1: A shuffleboard game is arranged with princely wagers on each match. Ben Gordon, Drew Gooden, and Aaron Gray - all dressed in either yacht- or deck-wear - take part.

Court 2: Andres Nocioni sets up mirrors along the baseline and monopolizes a rack of balls so he can watch himself shoot threes.

Court 3: Larry Hughes arranges his own game of shuffleboard, but calls it by a different name, because "anything Ben Gordon does sucks." A curious Thabo Sefolosha observes from half-court, declines several invitations to join in.

Locker room: Chris Duhon writes a mystery novel.

Court 4: Joakim Noah tries to convince any remaining Bulls to practice while Jim Boylan waves a white towel in his face.

Take a look at some NBA rosters and you might have a different opinion.
Who would Thabo start for and why?????? One game and Rose is being compared fo M Jeff.
Lets see a first have of a season. When Rose stole the ball in the back court it remind me of a move made famous by the "Great" Bobby Weiss!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And just what team in the NBA plays D??????? It is a zone D now, not a man to man because todays players are what you would call them............... lazy!

I think Nas may be drinking a little Koolaid, but I do believe the Bulls could have the deepest bench in the league - which can keep you in a lot of games. :D

I haven't heard comparisons to M Jeff so much as I've heard unfair / premature comparisons to Chris Paul.

Thabo would start for the Bucks  And I don't think he'll continue to start if he continues to commit fouls like he did last night. A Rose / Gordon 1/2 sounds about right for the balance of the season.

Noah still annoys the crap outa me, but it's not his fault he was drafted to this team, it's the GM's fault for not trading the pick for something else. They are still a JUMP SHOOSHTING TEAM. That's the rub. Rose improves them so dramatically because he drives to the hole and draws defenders...

Speaking of Paxson, did you guys see him in the pre-game interview? Fuck, I half expected Keith Hernandez and Clyde Frazier to suddenly bust in and declare his beard to be "weird," and his 'stache to be "trash."

After watching them last night, I'm holding out hope that they'll be less so this year. A lot of that came from Hinrich dribble-dribble-dribbling around until there was no time left on the shot clock and someone had to take a contested jump shot out of desperation.

In a (not so) similar vain, anybody notice how bad Norm Van Lier is looking? I mean he looks REALLY bad. I'm not trying to be funny but I'm really not sure how long Norm has left. Johnny Red Kerr looks better and he's probably 25 years older.

ok...I know Norm looks bad, but Johnny? He's got one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel. He's got this ghostly pallor to him...

Despite the 4 turnovers, Derrick Rose looked like a season pro out on the court last night running the point for the Bulls, and I really liked what he brought to the table. I don't want to get carried away, but #1 in white & red will make other players better. Had it not been for Derrick's solid debut, Tyrus Thomas looked like a beast at power forward and seemed to grow up after 2 disappointing seasons. I'm sure Vinny Del Negro and the coaching staff will definitely take more of Ty's 15 point, 10 rebound effort, not to mention Luol Deng's 21. I think ESPN Radio 1000's new PBP, Chuck Swirsky, will have a lot to cheer about this upcoming season based on first impressions.

Yeah, every so often they poke him with a stick and tell him which quarter it is and who's winning.

It may be , that he has indeed already died, but nobody has had the heart to tell him....

In any case, it's going to be interesting to watch Rose develop. Thomas did look like an interested party last night too and if he takes a big step up, this might be fun. I see Rose by virtue of his quickness and ability to get in the paint, making a lot of his fellow Bulls better. Defenses will need to collapse to help on Rose, creating open shots.

The great thing about the first game is that I now have hope this will at least be a somewhat fun team to watch. I still don't think they'll be very good, but they were pretty well unwatchable by the second half of next season, whereas this season, I think they'll be entertaining even in losses.

Then why dont they? How long does the talent stockpile take? I heard they were loaded the year they got gordon and deng. Still no legit nba star. Rose might end up a star.

No he's more protective of his role players than his children. His kid is going to San Diego to the Marine Corps while Ben 5'10 Gordon remains close to John in chicago.

5'10" Gordon is his leading scorer.

May be, but to just write him off as a role player is not fair, because he's the team's leading scorer.

ok how bout replace role players with #2 and #3 guys.

point is bulls need a star and paxson seems to not understand that. I wonder if it affects him that he was one of the "other" guys in the nba. Hardworking guy not the most talent. Maybe he values "high energy and high character" guys a little too much. Sometimes its just about talent. See: Shaq winning 4 titles while taking the first 4 months of the season off.

excuse me i wasnt clear. I meant replace the term "role player" with the term "#2 guy"
or "#3 guy"

The point is Ben Gordon is not a #1 guy. They probably coulda had KG at some point and they definitely had a great shot at gettin #24 from L.A.

If AI can be a #1 guy why not Gordon? Yes they could have gotten KG and no the Clippers don't have a #24

Because AI is more than a one dimensional shooter that can't even find his way into the starting lineup?

Oh I have forgotten Iverson shoots in 3 dimensional. One more thought the only reason Thabo is starting is that Rose isn't that good of a defender!!!!!!!!!!!1

Because Ben Gordon is to Allen Iverson
as
Adam Dunn is to Albert Pujols

Ok, let's assume that you actually understood what I meant. Allen Iverson can drive into the lane and score. Ben Gordon cannot. He's a jump shooter and that's it.

Now, let's talk about what I really meant. Ben Gordon is NOT a multi-dimensional player. He can't play defense. He can't distribute. He can't rebound.

Allen Iverson is a special talent and the only similarity between Gordon and Iverson is height.

If Ben Gordon was even comparable to Allen Iverson, he wouldn't have spent a majority of his career as a backup player.
