I will say that of the teams among the NHL's elite (deep postseason runs and/or dominant regular seasons), everyone but the Penguins has had at least one year where things go bad and the team misses the playoffs: Ducks, Capitals, Sharks, Kings, Bruins, Lightning, and now Blackhawks and Rangers (a team that's seemingly played a ton of playoff games with nothing to show for them). What happens with the last two going forward remains to be seen, but everyone else made it back. The Sharks were out in '15 and in the Final in '16. The Bolts were out last year and will probably win it all this year. Only the Canucks and Red Wings couldn't bounce back, and the Red Wings were winding down for years before they finally missed.
