It doesn't even make that much sense marketing wise! He's not the face of the franchise for this run like Kane and Toews, and is probably only the 3rd-most popular goalie in Hawks history after Esposito and Belfour. If the Hawks lost that series against Boston in 2013 he might very well have been booed out of town the next season.

Yeah, it's a pretty stupid narrative that McCub is forcing the Hawks to start a guy that hasn't played in 70 games the last 2 seasons combined for marketing purposes and yet somehow people have latched on to it like it's gospel.
