Don't fret if the Hawks lose. They whomped the Kings on their banner night, the Bruins lost to the Flyers, and the Hawks lost to the Wings. It happens. This could be the only time Alex Ovechkin gives a fuck between now and Sochi.

The Caps look scary on their top two lines, but shitty past that, which is about right for a team that regularly does just enough and no more -- something they won't get to do anymore in a non-bullshit division. Johansson-Backstrom-Ovechkin will do damage, Laich-Grabovski-Brouwer can as well, but man, fuck Troy Brouwer. All that guy has ever done is be a bitch. The bottom six looks ripe for exploitation, with Eric Fehr, a guy Winnipeg once signed as a human mascot but still didn't see fit to bring back, looking to center the checking line, and the brainfart-prone Martin Erat on his wing. The fourth line is Joel Ward in his age 33 season and some other replacement-level dudes.

At defense, Mike Green is a dangerous puck-mover but a defensive liability, Alzner/Erskine/Carlson whaaaaaatever, and their third pairing of Jack Hillen-Steve Oleksy is a fringe NHLer and a 27-year-old with a significant amount of time spent in the ECHL. So have fun with that. The Caps were 18th in preventing goals last year, not a surprise.

Not crazy about scratching Ben Smith; I'll take his limited talent over Bollig's no talent against a finesse team. Nordstrom has apparently performed admirably on the kill this preseason, so we shall see. Probably good to start him at a wing and move him to center later. Hayes better stay off his ass.

The league should adopt my proposed rule whereby the team that raises the banner the previous year gets to be the opponent on banner raising night the next season for whoever the champ is. Since banner night is essentially a guaranteed loss this will help offset that by getting a guaranteed win the next season. Under this rule, we would be playing LA tonight.
