I am not agreeing or disagreeing on Toews at this point, 27 is awfully young to regress, yet, seems that most games I watch he takes a shot or two that would put me out for a month. The one when they opened the door while he being checked in the boards. Oww, I am not walking after that, he took a break and played the next period.

Was thinking about when that all catches up with him, didnt think it would be now. Hope it wont be now.

He's played a ton of minutes for a player of his age in his career already. Long playoff runs. Been paired with a clearly in decline Hossa last 2 years along with a cast of average on the other side this year. With all the ice time he gets I'd expect 30g 40a but can see why he's not reaching those numbers last couple years . He sucks, trade him for Kopitar.

What might go down as Kane's greatest skill above his shooting and playmaking is that he's really hard to hit. He's a slippery little shit out there; guys who lock in on hitting him will be made to look foolish. I can't remember a player as elusive as Kane, which made last year's season-ender from that one Panther that much harder to deal with. Toews, having defensive assignments that Kane does not have, has had so much more contact over the years, and yeah, that's already adding up. My suspicion is that concussions and sub-concussive head trauma have taken the biggest toll on him. I just don't think he can see the game at the same level anymore.

Looking at Toews production, though, there hasn't been as steep a drop-off as you would think.

Career (Regular Season):

Season Age Tm Lg GP G A PTS +/- PIM
2007-08 19 CHI NHL 64 24 30 54 11 44
2008-09 20 CHI NHL 82 34 35 69 12 51
2009-10 21 CHI NHL 76 25 43 68 22 47 Stanley Cup
2010-11 22 CHI NHL 80 32 44 76 25 26
2011-12 23 CHI NHL 59 29 28 57 17 28 Injured
2012-13 24 CHI NHL 47 23 25 48 28 27 Stanley Cup/Lockout season
2013-14 25 CHI NHL 76 28 40 68 26 34
2014-15 26 CHI NHL 81 28 38 66 30 36 Stanley Cup
2015-16 27 CHI NHL 77 25 28 53 16 60 Prior to today's game

So, looking at career seasonal point production, he's right there in goals (26 so far this season including today), just down in assists, and it's pretty understandable when you have a sharply-declining and/or injured Hossa, and no stable line this season. He'll end up with a point total that is a career low, but not by much, and with constantly getting the most defensive attention.

Let's look at points per game:

2007-08: 0.844
2008-09: 0.841
2009-10: 0.895
2010-11: 0.950
2011-12: 0.966
2012-13: 1.021
2013-14: 0.895
2014-15: 0.815
2015-16: 0.692

Now does it look more like a steep drop? Even when he was being dogged for coasting on "intangibles" and "the little things," he was still averaging 73 points a season. A 25% reduction in points from that level is significant whether you like it or not.

Took you a while to respond with this...hmmmm...

So, you don't think that the Toews & (sometimes) Hossa & ______ Line this season may have something to do with it? Oh, and there's still 3 games left...

 He has been busy trying to figure out a way to spin that he is right

Actually, I don't entirely disagree with CH - I even said on this forum halfway into the season that I wondered if the hard miles and abuse that Toews has endured is already slowing him down. I think while it's very possible or even likely that Toews may have peaked career-wise, I don't believe that it has been a precipitous fall, especially taking into account the role he has assumed for his entire career thus far.

My issue with CH is the constant cheap shots he takes at Toews with a "he sucks" tone without much to back it up with - especially since when he posts elsewhere he puts a lot more thought and creativity into his snark.

Has he lost a step or is he smart enough to realize that the ONLY thing that matters in the regular season is qualifying for the Cup playoffs. Once they ensured they would qualify this year they went into the tank for 2 months. I really don't think this team gives a shit whether they are 1st or 8th in the seeding. They know they are capable of winning every series.

This guy gets it.

Playing 82 pre-season games is a grind.

Well if he sucks in the playoffs we can just blame it on Crow's injury somehow.

 No response to the Hossa and Panarin comparison.

I have a new one, Toews is to CH as Kane is to DiCaro.

This.

I'm reserving judgment until the playoffs are over.

As I stated, if he has lost a step, he sure just made up for it by outworking the entire AZ team
