For starters Hatch, I'd probably start hanging out with Abbatacola. Sadly though, it indeed does look like you may be a little late.

It ended in tragedy last year when Mount Carmel blew it. But you might follow the twitter feeds of any schools you know are playing--they often have people periscoping the games.

It's a great tournament to watch in person, too.

I just want to show my son that he'll never be that good, so he might as well give up baseball now.

Starts Wednesday. Brother Rice is the best team in the state. Plainfield North and Mt Carmel are really good too.

Go on the IHSA website, click on either 3-4A Brackets and scroll down to the regional games listed lower on the page to get the matchups & times.

Tickets are generally about $5 for adults.

I haven't seen them this year, but I presume they're pretty much what they always have been. Solid baseball players with a good amount of D1 talent sprinkled around. The few I know/know of were really pretty good kids, easy to cheer for.

You can always go to Edgy Tim's site as well. Probably the best place.

Baseball is very complicated and difficult to understand. You better bring Jorr with you so he can explain everything to you.

Its quite simple when he explains it. the starting pitcher is the only player that matters. you can ignore eveyone else.

Coal City beat Joliet Catholic 1-0. Littleton over Fellows. Hell of a game.

Mount Carmel plays Lyons Saturday at Mount Carmel for the regional title--this has turned out to be a good playoff rivalry over the past seven or eight years.

Went to the OPRF / Lane Tech game today. Pitchers dominated. 1-0 in 8 innings. OPRF starter Hank Christie overcame multiple miscues by his fielders. Guessing he was in the 88-90mph range. I heard he is going to NU but not sure.

Great book concerning (in small part) Lane Tech: One Shot at Forever by Chris Ballard

Brother Rice knocked off Rita. Now they play the winner of St Laurence vs Mt Carmel. Hell of a sectional when all 4 teams are good enough to win it all.

OPRF has to be the most consistently excellent program in the state--I think they have a tremendous youth program. I saw Ben Shelton hit a ball what had to be at least 450 feet. The guy was like an adult Darryl Strawberry in HS (minus the coke one presumes). Kaiser was a psycho screamer though, made the games unpleasant. And they wore these ferkakta 70s uniforms well into the 80s

I don't think that's true.

Be sure to keep an eye on #19 for MC.

I hadn't seen a high school game since I was in high school in the late 80s. I was pretty surprised how good these kids are - big, strong, picture perfect strokes and deliveries.

Being groomed from age six to be a baseball star does produce some really good players. I doubt the wear and tear on arms is a good thing though.

Ran into a Mount Carmel baseball player from the early 90s. They had a pretty good team then, ranked between 6-10 in state. Shame they didn't go downstate, I said. So close. He said, "Ah, we were happy. I mean, I was a football player who liked to play a little baseball. Today's kids are strictly baseball players. A few play football, but they've been raised to get a B+ average and turn double plays since they were eight years old. It's all they know, and it's kind of weird."

He's a high school principal now at a Catholic school in Cincinnati.

Co Workers kid is a pretty decent pitcher for Lake Park. They gave St Charles all they could handle but lost 5-4 in 8 in a stomach punch type situation.

LP loaded the bases with nobody out in the 8th. 4-4 at the time. Strikeout, then 1-2-3 double play.

Then in the bottom of the inning St Charles loaded the bases (walk, hbp, balk, intentional walk) with nobody out. Kid hit a fly ball to center, not deep enough to tag up. Runner on third got too far off the base though so the catcher fired down to 3b and they had em in a rundown. Third baseman ran him toward home and threw to the catcher at the last second. Off his mitt. Runner slides in safely to win the Sectional.

My guy says 3b could have caught and tagged the kid without the throw. Not sure. That's a tough one though.

Today, most don't once junior year rolls around. A few do, though. But it's not like it was in years past. The baseball program has its own prestige, if that makes sense. Plus, so many kids go there now for baseball only.
