Ignatius plays Loyola tonight for the Jesuit Cup.

They play the Wildkitts tomorrow night at Loyola in the Danny Did Tourny.

Anyone interested in joining me to see the finest in high school basketball?

I went to a child-safety-on social-media-presentation the other night. She said perverts go to high school games, get the rosters, and then try to connect via the interwebs.

Where do you want to meet?

I'm not 100% sure about this because it was so long ago, but I think the guy who was Danny's dad and started Danny Did played basketball on some teams that my buddy coached at Margaret Mary's.

My friend started coaching because his nephews were on the team and then kept on even after they graduated. God knows why anyone would want to do that. But he was a young guy who loved hoops and liked being like kind of a big brother to these kids.

Anyway, pretty much every kid on his teams was a little asshole except the kid who ended up being Danny's dad (damn, we are really old!), who was the nicest kid you would ever want to meet. I shouldn't say that. There was also a big kid who was the son of the previous coach who was a really good kid. He ended up being a flame-throwing pitcher at St. Ignatius and Northwestern.

The parents were the worst. One of them was Dick Devine, yeah, that Dick Devine. I think Devine had been a decent baller back in the day (of the two-handed set shot). Devine's kid was no damn good, but of course Dick thought he was Pete Maravich. He wanted the kid to take every shot. The parents almost had an insurrection against my buddy. But the thing is, none of them had the time or the real desire to actually coach the team. It's a pain in the ass. Devine actually thought my buddy should show up every day, coach these little punks, and then on Saturday he would step in and run the team during the games. Of course my buddy wasn't going for that and he had enough back up from certain factions that it never happened. It didn't stop some parents from whining though, but ultimately they knew if they didn't shut up, one of them was gonna be there going through drills on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

I find that Devine story difficult to believe. He is a really nice, down to earth guy and his kids are all pretty nice as well. Every one of them is short, so there is no way they were going to be basketball stars.

I went to the game on Friday night. It was a lot of fun. The gym was packed and kids on both sides were very into the game. SICP has some handsome, young priest who the kids all seem to gravitate towards. He was leading cheers. Blasé Cupich was in attendance. It was loud and no one sat the entire game. The teams battled and the game was close throughout. It was really the spirit of high school basketball. Ignatius won.

I heard they got blown out by Evanston. I didn't go. My friend told me they got dunked on.

The Danny Did people are the Stantons. They are a typically big Roger's Park family. All of them are great guys.

Well, I don't know Devine beyond that, but he wouldn't be the first nice guy who got goofy over his kid's sports. I'm sure to his way of thinking he was a former star basketball player with a kid on the team and my friend was some goof in his early twenties (which was true). You know how everybody wants to have input on game day but very few of them want to actually put in the work with the kids. Devine wasn't the only guy whining. It was almost like Hoosiers.

I'm pretty sure Mike Stanton was on the team. One of only two kids on the team that weren't asswipes. The other good kid was Benjy Flammang. Not sure, but I'm guessing he might have been the stud guy on your Ignatius baseball team. You guys have to be pretty close in age.

Really? What year did you graduate? I would guess Flammang is class of '92 maybe.

When we were in high school my friend reffed a youth flag football league in our neighborhood. The alderman ran the team his kid was on and ended it up getting ejected from a game by my friend.

Ignatius does a horrible job of informing alumni of athletic events. I think it would be a great idea for them to have a game each year where they invite back former players. I think they could also make some money on such an event, which would be the school's incentive for action.

No. I have to meet with Polish American law students. I may go on Saturday as they play Loyola at Loyola I believe. Is their someone on the team you are looking at?

I was going to tell you to watch the pitcher on the other team. He's interesting with an even more interesting back story.

Tough break for the cake eaters. They ran into a buzz saw.

The cake eaters were beat by Solorio. I thought Simeon knocked you out. That's a terrible loss.

Not as bad as Mount Carmel losing to Reavis.

Reavis got hot towards the end of the season. They lost to St Laurence 1-0.

Solorio has won 2 of 3 vs Simeon so far this year.

Reavis was on a 7 game losing streak entering the playoffs.

It didn't help MC that Argo forfeited there playoff game due to graduation a couple days before but still no excuse to lose to Reavis.

Hurry will have them back. Laurence is pretty damn good anyway. Still shocking.

I've taught a bunch of Solorio grads, and they have all been really cool.
