In August, Trump proclaimed "PLAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL!", and also was involved in talks to get the Big 10 goin'.

2 months later, his dream was realized, as the Illini started the Big 10 season at Wisconsin.

Ironically, Wisconsin QB caught Covid and will be out 3 weeks.

Illini driving down to win this one.

Big interception to get possession.

Another INT!

Terrible playcall, why are they passing.

Another chance for the win now.

No business having a chance to win this one. What was the Rutgers OC thinking. You were moving the ball easily down field and the decide to throw. I still have faith Illinois will screw it up. Bad teams find ways to lose.

We look so terrible.

No passing game.

Tentative, everybody looking around at each other.

Fucking MOVE it!!!

you were damn near right. We practically gave the game away.

We had 3 FG tries in the last 5 minutes. You rarely ever see that.

Finally we got the last one. Isaiiah Williams is a running talent. First start, first win.

Illini with an impressive win.

2 straight road wins. Peters back at QB and the offense was better.

Lovie and the Illinois staff blew off the HS Coaches association virtual clinic this week. Makes more sense now. Then again, I have never seen an in state coach spend less time even trying to recruit Illinois.

They definitely can.

What they need is a college coach who understands the college game, the Big Ten, and how to recruit well beyond a few skill positions. But please, no more coaches from the MAC in basketball or football.

Jim Leonhard from Wisconsin, please.

As an alum who has never contemplated giving a dime to the athletic program, I no longer care. I thought that bringing Lovie in was a novel idea, and that the Tampa 2 and the Peanut Punch would be enough to be a consistent 7-5 against the non-conference games and the Marylands and Nebraskas, and get them to an ESPN-owned bowl game each year, preferably on a day when I was off of work. That's all I asked for from him.

Focus on basketball, don't spend much on football until the NCAA implodes. Covid has shown that they should just make college football U22 football and allow colleges to have teams with non students if they want.

Maybe Illinois shouldn't focus on any sports at all. They can be like Wisconsin before Barry Alvarez.

They had Prophetstown’s own Brett Bielema as a potential candidate. I’m cheering for him so they can get the sign back out of storage. Also, I think it would be a horrible choice.

That's the dream of every school, I think. Great coach, great AD. Unlike another Bob Devaney guy, Tom Osborne, Alvarez as the AD has brought in good coaches who have kept the team competitive. He also built the program, whereas Osborne inherited it.

Agree with Dr. Chet.

The Illini and Northwestern were two of the worst football programs in the country when I was growing up (70s). I never thought the Wildcats would eventually emerge as the better program on down the road. Pretty sad really.

Lovie Smith has been fired in a surprise move.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/s ... -5-seasons

*************************8

Lovie Smith is out as Illinois' head football coach after five seasons, the school announced Sunday.

Illinois called a team meeting for noon ET Sunday to inform players of the decision. The Fighting Illini fell 28-10 to No. 14 Northwestern on Saturday to finish their regular season at 2-5. Illinois is slated to play an eighth game this week during Big Ten championship weekend.

Smith, 62, went 17-39 (10-33 in the Big Ten) in five seasons at Illinois, his first stop in college football since 1995, when he coached defensive backs at Ohio State. He had a lengthy NFL career that included head-coaching stops with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Smith guided the Bears to a Super Bowl appearance in 2006 and went 81-63 with the team.

Who will Illinois hire to replace Lovie Smith?
Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman hired Smith just weeks after his own hiring in the winter of 2016. Smith led Illinois to a bowl appearance in 2019, and the team had high expectations this fall with many key players returning.

"Lovie Smith led the Illinois football program with unquestioned integrity during his nearly five years of service," said Whitman in a statement. "I have tremendous respect for Coach Smith and will always be grateful to him for providing a steady, experienced hand at a time when our program required stability. His unshakeable leadership, never more needed than during this pandemic, will be forever remembered.

"Nonetheless, based on extensive evaluation of the program's current state and future outlook, I have concluded the program is not progressing at the rate we should expect at this advanced stage in Coach Smith's tenure. To achieve our competitive objectives, I believe new leadership of the football program is required. I will always look fondly on the time Lovie and I have spent together. I wish him and MaryAnne nothing but the best."

Potential candidates to replace Smith include Buffalo's Lance Leipold, Army's Jeff Monken, Kent State's Sean Lewis, New York Giants assistant Bret Bielema (a former head coach at Wisconsin and Arkansas), Nevada's Jay Norvell, Toledo's Jason Candle, Tulane's Willie Fritz and several coordinators, including Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea and Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
