Was made aware this morning that they won the NCAA championship last year???

I mean I know its not hoops, but its still damn impressive for a school in Rogers Park/Edgewater to beating any and all the Cali schools. Those schools recruit top players for years ahead of time before Loyola even knows about them.

Plus...

OFFER A - San Diego St Scholarhsip v OFFER B - Loyola??????

Learned they beat USC and UC Cal Davis en route...

Volleyball players are some serious athletes, some could probably play and some have played College Hoops...so this isnt like they won the Ping Pong championship.

One of the main guys on that team was a kid named Joe Smalzer. His dad, also Joe Smalzer, was probably the best all around athlete of his time in Chicago Heights, which is saying something. Big Joe was a good end for the Illini in the 70s.

volleyball is fine, but it should only be played by women with a male audience.

Ben Plaisted plays for them and I know his father and younger brother. His younger brother(plays baseball with my son) was on the US National team last year, they are a crazy good volleyball family.

We should have a board outing Biggie!!!

Saw some highlights...these guys play vicious hits.

2 men or women on Sand...more of a peaceful game, good setting, with hot chicks everywhere, with occasional hard spikes, I assume this the pro level all these guys want to get to.

But 6 guys on the court, almost every shot is a kill shot...actually kinda vicious.

They have a couple of Cali kids, but they are almost all from Midwest..the New hotbed of Volleyball....

However, I do know playing 2 man in the sand is a bit of a different game, plus you better be good looking if you want some sponsors...goes for men or women on that one. or you have to be very best.

Their suite might consist of a roped off area with fold out chairs.

Xcountry taught philosophy of sports at Arizona. he was amazed at the concept of the 'layups'

We would go and shoot a layup and talk about it.

He was fascinated how many seperate things the mind and body had to coordinate to make such a shot. Jump off left foot, lift right knee, shoot with right hand, aim at backboard, dribble to basket, dont look down at ball. It was actually hysterical watching him breakdown all the things Kenny Lofton had to do....it was hysterical watching this guy tell Lofton all the stuff he just did and Lofton was like 'i just do it"....

Lewis University in beautiful Romeoville has won a championship and I believe is perennially ranked. Imagine that recruiting pitch, though I though they and Loyola were heavy with Eastern Europeans and Russians desperate for a taste of Capitalism. NPR covered the Loyola championship like it was the Super Bowl. Cheryl Ray Stout was all over it.

Lewis relies heavily on recruiting the Latin American countries. I went to a game of theirs once - they were playing UCLA or some other national powerhouse from California. I kid you not, their gym is smaller than almost all high school gyms. I also think they got in trouble for various violations, no?

Men's college VB is super athletic and really aggressive/"vicious". These guys play way above the net and hit the ball straight down. And it is non-stop, super personal shit talking the entire time because they are about 6 inches from each other during all breaks, yet maybe some feeling of fearlessness because they never actually come in contact.
Had a good friend that played at UW-Milwaukee, caught a few of his games. It's pretty entertaining actually. The American guys are all of the super athletic basketball freaks that never learned to shoot or play defense.

Pretty sure Lewis is a faith based university, so they would get kids to go to the School for that purpose.

Not sure what Lewis even won a Championship in, but when I see a kid from Manhattan Beach CA go to Loyola in Chicago to play Volleyball, I almost think the kid thought he got an offer from Loyola Marymount and this is where he thought he was going to school!

I once thought Loyola Marymount was our Loyola when filling out an NCAA bracket as a kid. I also thought Northwestern State was Northwestern. I did about as well you think I did.

And after two big road wins on the West Coast, Loyola is now ranked #1 in this young volleyball season.

How were you at square dancing?

Author:  Curious Hair [ Fri Jan 16, 2015 9:27 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Loyola mens Volleyball

I had repressed it until you brought it up, asshole.

Thankfully, we only did square dancing for a couple days and concentrated on line dancing for most of the 12-day unit. Yeah, square dancing was so unspeakably traumatic that line dancing was a preferable alternative. Bernstein had a great bit on line dancing, something about how once you get a bunch of people dancing in a line, you can get them to do anything evil.

And now your Back To Back National Champions, Loyola Ramblers! #3 seed Loyola defeats #1 seed Lewis in the first non-west coast Final in the 46 year history of the men's tournament. The fifth set went 23-21 and had a combined 11 match points.
