Your criticisms are fair. I'm not saying those are the same for all kids. I think you'd find it easier and less of a hassle to get a kid from Bloomington-Normal.

Illinois has pretty much owned the state outside of Chicago. They've missed on some high profile guys over the years- Joey Range, Michael Payne, Uwe Blab, LaPhonso Ellis, Jay Shidler, Chuck Verderber, etc., but for the most part they've done well to keep those downstate players at the state school.
Didn't it result in some pretty good teams?

Wasn't the 2005 Illini a lot of Peoria kids and some of the downturn of the Illini has been Peoria seeing a sharp decline in talent?

They have done well with Peoria guys over the years, but I'm not sure there were any that did much on the '05 team. I can't even think of that big white stiff's name right now, the kid from Richwoods, Bill Something. I know I was at the state championship game where his team gave Rose's Simeon team all they wanted. So he wasn't in Champaign in 2005.

Are you thinking of David Booth? The real guy DePAul had that never worked out was the little fellow, Howard Nathan. That fucker was as quick with a basketball as anyone I've ever seen. I think he fucked himself up in a bad car wreck.

yeah that's the guy. Never amounted to the hype. Big DePaul recruits are like Cub prospects.

I think you mean David Booth. He was hanging around DePaul for awhile but he's an NBA scout now. I have a vague recollection of him scoring like 35 points in a regular season win at Syracuse.

This is one of the major reasons that DePaul has no shot to be good by recruiting Chicago. Even if it works, they'll get slapped down so fast the players likely wouldn't be there by the tournament.

If I'm DePaul, I concentrate on the areas from Chicago to Indianapolis to St. Louis. There are plenty of kids from those areas that would love to go to Chicago and they don't have the same systems you have to control. I'll simply bring up Purdue because it is what I know but they pretty much avoid Chicago unless there is a major connection to the school like Kendall Stephens. They seem more interested in Ohio than Chicago even though it's only a 2 hour drive away. If a close Big Ten school thought they could build a winner with Chicago kids they'd be doing it.

It's just like Illinois. They worry way too much about Chicago. They should dominate from south of I-80 to St. Louis. Instead, they chase the next Cliff Alexander because the fans want every coach to act like Chicago is the golden goose. Target kids with an Illinois connection in Chicago but get the best non-Chicago players in the state and I think you'll do pretty well.

What evidence do you have to support this statement? Why would a kid want to come to DePaul when the facilities are bad, the student body is largely comprised of commuters, and the program lacks visibility? Changing recruitment strategies won't make much of an impact DePaul makes some significant changes within and beyond the Athletic Department--or goes dirty a la Pat Kennedy.

Xavier has a pretty decent on campus arena that they share with other school teams. Cincinnati has a really nice on campus facility. But still, it's in Cincinnati. If they can have two perennial tournament teams...

not sure why Mr. Valpo would come to DePaul, but hey whatever. He's got a pretty good resume.

I don't know about that. He was a pretty good player. He might be the all-time leading scorer at DePaul. I'm not sure if he caught Aguirre, but he's not far behind.

I think he is a good hire also. DePaul actually had some talent on this past yrs. team. Purnell was a bad hire from the start. He was far too old and didn't have any Chicago connects. His style of play was also outdated. He still wants to use a pressing style of play. You are not going to beat better teams with that. They get layups off of that. He also utilized about 10 players a game on a roster built to play about 7. It is not a complete rebuild as Purnell was able to recruit decent talent the past 2 yrs.

I checked. #2 but way behind aguirre. I guess he was a good college player, but you knew he was never going to play in the pros. may be alltime leader in games played too.

Steve Lavin is out at St. Johns.

If I was DePaul I would start filling a dumptruck with cash immediately.

Lavin would be a good choice; maybe he has another offer on the table.

Yes, probably go back to ESPN where the stress is not so much.

He had a pretty good run at Depaul, didn't he?

No doubt it is a strange hire, but I would think they could do a lot worse

WBBM reported this morning that they had significantly upped their offer to Drew, the up-and-comers want nothing to do with this job...

I wonder if the prospect of having to deal with Public League coaches has soured a number of the up and comers. They have attempted to have a say in coaching hires for yrs. I have it on pretty good authority that Robert Smith wanted nothing to do with Purnell especially early on. I wonder if that has played a role in some of this.

Wow. Dave freaking Leitao??? This program is a joke. The current state of college basketball and football in the great state of Illinois is embarrassing.

I remember where I was when Reagan got shot.
I remember where I was when I found out Kurt Cobain died.
I remember where I was when I heard Howard Nathan had failed out of DePaul.

Nathan was well on his way to being the best PG in DePaul history, but he was too stupid to attend class. He dominated every matchup he had, made Nick Van Exel his bitch on multiple occasions. I have no doubt he would've carried DePaul on his back to the most post season success the team had had since 1979. On the court he was simply a winner...I've never seen a player come up with as many clean late game steals as he did. And this was all just based on his freshman year. IF Booth didn't get hurt that year I have no doubt that team would've contended for the 2nd and even the 3rd weekend of the NCAA tourny.

After failing out Nathan went to some small school in Louisiana and never matched what he did as freshman at DePaul. Had a brief NBA career. Then back to Peoria to deal drugs before eventually getting in a bad accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

I forgot about Hunter. Thats five NBA players. Depaul should have been better and you can't fault the recruiting. Brown and Quentin Richardson were McDonald's All Americans. Kennedy got exposed as a bad coach. They made the tournament but their team should have been better.

Which brings me to my favorite trivia question i used to use back then.....name a team in NCAA history that had 5 NBA draft picks and never won an NCAA tournament game?

Pat Kennedy was a helluva game coach

Virginia didnt go so well for Leitao. He might have maxxed out the last time he was here.

The lady A.D. sure has stuck around a while. Theres no football to worry about. She has done OK with womans basketball, but the big money comes from the men's program and after 13 years, it still sucks.
