Is Digger Phelps still interested in the job? If not, what's Dick Versace up to these days?

They'd be better off if he could suit up and play.

Doug Gottlieb brought up Brian Wardle's name (hinsdale central/marquette) as a local guy for depaul... i'd have to guess Wardle could get a better job than depaul though

As someone who has 2 degrees on my wall from DePaul and had season tickets during the glory days of Aguire and Cummings I couldn't care less what they do. As far as I'm concerned, we have no basketball team.

I've come a long way from my days as a campus activist when I used to sell my "FEYER MEYER" t-shirts in the cafeteria and student center. Highlight was when I ran into Joey while wearing one of the shirts and he whined to me "thanks for the support" and I replied "thanks for taking our team from the top 20 to the top 75". Shit, if I only knew that 20 years later the top 75 sounds pretty damn good.

I'd be good with Rod.

I wouldn't mind taking a shot at Jeff Capel.

You aren't going to find a candidate willing to take this job who doesn't have a few blemishes. I don't even think it is a job an up and comer will be willing to take anymore. I think this is a job that will only be taken by a guy on the road to redemption.

DePaul has no facilities, no real student body (commuter school) and a middling academic reputation.

There's really not much to sell to head coaching candidates.

DePaul is going to be irrelevant for at least another decade.

I think there's more on campus housing than ever. It doesn't really mean anything if the games are being played many miles away though.

I doubt DePaul will ever be a power again, but they were at a lower point in the early 70s than they are now and we all know what happened then.

yea, what JORR said. There's lots of students on campus these days. Been like that for 20 years.

The ONLY issue is the arena.

Pitt has the same problem with football though. Basketball is packed with the great on campus arena. When you have to get students to get downtown for football at Heinz field attendance suffers.

Sorry, but you simply don't know what you're talking about. Over 80% of De Paul students commute.

So again, the problems for DePaul's basketball program are many: no arena, no resident student body, no real workout facilities.

Nobody said anything different. But they still have more on campus housing than ever. I believe they may be the largest Catholic school in the country.

DePaul's total enrollment is somewhere around 19,000 students.

That means there's fewer than 4,000 students living on campus.

Do you consider that a significant resident population? I sure don't.

De Paul is a commuter school that is fine but not special academically (although its weakness in STEM disciplines will continue to hurt it in an era where humanities enrollments are sharply dropping) and has seemingly insurmountable facilities problems. There's just not much to sell there--to prospective students or coaches.

All it takes is a good coach and one primo recruit. With the depth of local talent there is no reason DePaul can't consistently be one of the best 64 teams in D-1. Xavier-like is a very realistic goal and it can be done fast.

I would think at least a Illinois school can get the 5th best player off of Simeon or the other handful of production schools. That should make them more competitive than this? Who is the kid that left Kentucky to go out west because he couldn't crack their rotation. Work harder and find those guys.

Well, apparently we're both wrong. According to DePaul, the university's total enrollment is 23,799.

http://offices.depaul.edu/emm/facts-and-figures/Pages/university-enrollment.aspx

So there's fewer than 4,800 students living on campus.

That's not so good, especially if you're competing against high-profile state and private institutions for recruits. DePaul is a commuter school with OK academics and a major facilities problem. The university can't even sell its basketball tradition anymore because the only people who remember the program's halcyon days are middle-aged or older.

That site makes no sense. It lists the university's total enrollment as 30,000+ on the link you provided. But then if you click on the link to DePaul, it lists full-time enrollment as 19,002 and part-time enrollment as 5,964. That's a total enrollment of 24,966, which is still off.

Why would a primo recruit want to come to DePaul?

You're right about that. If I go to a game at the Horizon I might be one of the youngest guys there. They made a mistake back when they were King Kong taking the games off campus. It's easy to understand why they did it at the time.

They should be playing in a 10,000 seat arena in Lincoln Park. I'm not suggesting that would solve all their problems, but it would be a start. Now you need a coach that can keep a least some of the top Chicago kids at home.

I believe Danny B is correct though. All it would take is one or two guys to come. And why would they? Who knows? Maybe it's a kid who doesn't want to be far from his mommy. The program was flat on its back in the early 70s. I believe they actually had a vote on whether to drop down to Division II. Meyer established his New Jersey connection with Ron Norwood. Then Corzine and Ponsetto came. Then more Jersey guys. And things started rolling. I doubt that will happen again, but it could. It wasn't that long ago that they had Kennedy and he locked up Chicago.
