Of course. Have you ever had a pork chop sandwich?

Yes. Once.

I may make a trek out to the hinterlands.

I have to admit I've always been intrigued by the marketing for this event. I've seen billboards for it at like 31st and Kedzie. In May.

What constitutes a "home arts exhibit"?

Sandwich Sportsman's Club. We are raffling a hog.

I will be there Friday night and probably once on the weekend, too... I'll let you know when it gets closer. Definitely Friday, though.

Nice. Unless the missus vetoes it, I'm gonna go....

Most of them will be cheap Illinois-breds. I doubt anything good will be there. In the past there were some horsemen that trained at the fairgrounds- Gary Rath comes to mind- who might have a decent horse that would make an appearance at the fair, but I doubt that's the case now, though I'm sure somebody trains there year round.

The Department of Agriculture fucked up the county fairs to accommodate the horse owners. It used to be that to be eligible for the big final at Springfield a horse had to make at least one start at a county fair. This doesn't really apply to the Dekalb County Fair since traditionally it's held in early September and the State fair is always mid-August, but there were several good county fair circuits, the Big Ten, Egyptian, etc. Of course, it was a pain in the ass for owners and horsemen who were based in Chicago to have to run out to Mendota or down to Lincoln in order to qualify for the big pot at Springfield. Also, nobody really wanted to race their $100,000+ animal on one of these bullrings. The quality of the tracks and the conditions vary widely. Some of these places are 1/3 of a mile and they score four horses across. Sandwich was always pretty good, because as I said, there were guys training there year round, so it behooved them to keep the track in good shape.

When we won the State Fair Final in 2001 it went for $60,000. Last week they raced for $36,000. Harness racing in Illinois is on life support with the remaining holdouts racing at Hawthorne and praying for a casino subsidy that will never come, and even if it did, would just be a band-aid on a bullet wound until the casino operators figured out how to eliminate racing like they're doing right now in Florida.

The City of Sandwich our client. I might actually be there.

Didn't you guys just host a breakfast or something? Thought I saw a sign.

Yes, buffet breakfast open to the public one Sunday a month.

Hope you can make it to the fair. Should I keep an eye out for the pic in your avatar?

I don't know what this SW burbs thing you speak of is, but a poker game sounds fantastic.

It's been too long since I've taken Don, Don, Douchebag, and Darkside's money at a poker table. We need to do it again soon.

You should ask BigFan to do it. I know he keeps trying to get a game together.

We could make an exception for a non-native Cubs fan.
