Everyone I know who has been there says Stanley Park is gorgeous. Just try not to riot.

The hype is unwarranted. Its pretty, but everywhere in the PNW is pretty. The food is good, not great, and certainly not better than Portland or Seattle. It feels kinda like a vertical, colder Houston.

Vancouver Island is supposed to be really pretty and also full of the realest, dirtiest, dead-endest hippies the continent has to offer.

Less hipsters in Vancouver than Portland or Seattle. Everything is more expensive though.

What's Houstonian about it? I know there are expressway viaducts crisscrossing the city; the Canucks' arena is next to a few and really makes the area ugly. Also, they slap up a new highrise every day (and dollars to donuts half of the units are owned but unoccupied by Chinese nationals who might need a landing spot if shit ever gets too real out there). But I think of Houston as one of the worst cases of urban sprawl in America and it's hard for me to apply that to a city that doesn't really have room to sprawl. Some of those suburbs are supposed to be nasty, though.

Despite being a massive immigrant city, like Houston, it really doesn't have any depth to its culture. You're right that its not sprawl, but it somehow manages to capture everything bad about the sprawl in a high-rise atmosphere.

This sounds a little like Toronto, which most definitely does have sprawl. It was Canada's second city until the separatists lost their minds and tried to roll cosmopolitan Montreal back into some sort of remote French trading post, and this was only like 40 years ago. People there used to drive down to Buffalo for nightlife. Buffalo.

Incidentally, the antisemitism of the separatist movement has really flown under the radar. Not only did they chase their Jewish community out to Ontario and points south, they blamed what was left of it for the failure of their secession referendum. "Why did we lose? Money and the ethnic vote," which is only subtle compared to Ted Cruz condemning "New York money and media."
