Rumor has it that those were paid appearances.

Mac was paid in smokes that fell off a truck though.

Could this bored regularly put together, say, 4-6 people to do a monthly roundtable podcast that, while it can be somewhat jokey and fun, needs to also have a solid base of knowledge about whatever topic(s) are on the agenda?

My concern isn't the material nor finding the appropriately knowledgeable people (of which I do not count myself among), rather that it would be that scheduling conflicts would all but make this a completely implausible idea.

It does cost money.

Unless you're with bigfan.

Scheduling is always my problem. Miles can barely practice once a weekend and there are only three of us. Regardless, I would love to be a part of anything that requires headphones and a mic.

Drove around Lexington today -- there are some expensive hobbyists out there. And I fed Silver Charm a piece of carrot. :)

I'm gonna have to ask you to restate that in English please.

Wait, I get the first part ... you're in Bourbon country (damn you). That last part is still all pops and buzzes over here.

The folks that have thoroughbreds are participating in a very expeinsive hobby -- if you want Curlin to sire your horse you are looking at 150k. Tapit is 300k. In any event, some folks set up a "retirement home" farm for some of the older, really good horses -- Silver Charm won the Kentucky Derby in 1997 and is past his mating years, so he gets to hang out at this farm and people can give him some food and pet him. War Emblem is also there but is a little more agressive so they don't let you hang out with him. Breeders Cup Classic Alphabet Soup is there and is a very sweet horse. Owners put this together after they found big race winners were being sent to glue factories if they could not breed.

I guess saying they paid a good amount of money is a relative term.

Even if they monetized this place and doubled their money it wouldn't really be what I consider a very big investment. I would have been all in on buying this place if I thought it could make real money but I may be shortsighted on this.

Like, in life?

you and I worked on a blog a while back. Are you trying to monetize things? Do you want to pull traffic here for other reasons? What are your thoughts related to a goal?

Curiosity, mainly.

With as much traffic as this site gets, and with as many interests and skill sets inherent in the members of this place, AND considering the board was just sold for what sounds like a substantial amount... I wonder what the Wisemen have in store.

Of course, the main goal could simply be to remain a place for people to call each other names.

In the past the three who purchased the board have said they don't want to monetize it. Way in the past I approached BF about turning this into a msg board and blog. I received no response. I've come to realize BF mainly just wanted to cash out on the board for himself.

That is not true. He bought it to cash out. He ran it for 15 years even when it was obvious there was going to be no payday.

This might be too "inside baseball" but I estimate this forum (specifically the URL chicagofanatics.com) got roughly 15,000 hits in June 2017*. That's not incredible, but that's a hell of a foundation on which to build if there was any desire to do so.

I don't believe any of us has ever said that we would never monetize the site. It's just that we didn't buy it with some grand plan to make money from it. We bought it so we could all keep arguing.

That's my understanding as well. However, with that being stated, in the event you wanted to do so... there's an opportunity.

And to get ahead of anyone thinking this is a passive-aggressive way of saying the Board "needs something," it's not. The Board is perfectly fine the way it is.

I'm confident this place could make money. I'm confident doubling an investment could happen in months. "Real money" is something that would take a lot work but making a profit really wouldn't be hard.

There would be a little more moderating but most stuff would live.
