| Post subject: | Removing Black Tile Glue from Hardwood |
Over the weekend my wife and I started ripping up the old linoleum tile in our kitchen. House was built in the 1920s, but not sure when this tile was installed. The original hardwood is underneath, but since the previous owners laid the tile over the hardwood we now have black tile glue to remove. This morning during a Google search to learn about the best way to remove said glue, I start seeing the word "asbestos." So obviously I think I am going to die now. What are my options to get this shit off the flooring? One quote I received was $170 to test for asbestos, then roughly $1600 to remove it if the test is positive. Is this something we could DIY, since, you know, we're obviously going to die now? |

Luckily the tile was glued to plywood which was glued to the hardwood, and we were able to get all the upper layers off the floor. All we have now is hardwood with black glue on top. Our original thought was to buy a solution to spread on the glue to help remove it. We'd like to still go with that option assuming we don't need to go the whole hazmat route. |

You're probably fine, but I would have a professional do it. You want it removed properly, and you want someone who is bonded and insured to do it. |

Are you going to sand and refinish it yourself? If not don't mention the black glue and let the guy who is going to sand and refinish it remove it. You may want to wait a month or 2 because carpenters aren't hungry yet. This summer has been very good to them. |
