If i'm selling a car privately, does it matter that the registration is expired ?

also other than a bill of sale, i need to notify the DMV somehow right ?

yes, you need to notify the State.

"Complete and mail the Notice of Sale form(attached to the bottom of the title) to the Secretary of State’s office. If the title does not contain a Notice of Sale form, it may be down-loaded at www.cyberdriveillinois.com.

If Bagels owns this car, it must have a great system.

No, you do not have to have the car registration current to sell it.

My sister had a car that didn't pass emissions and I said fuck it and sold it for her on AutoTrader instead of paying to fix and pass the test - which you need to pass before you can renew your registration. Just sell it "As-Is" or, alternatively, you can say that it doesn't pass emissions.

actually, it does need to pass the emissions test. But, i don't see why it wouldn't. It's in solid shape for a 'beater'

I don’t believe I’ve ever failed the emissions test in any car I’ve ever owned, and it’s not like I’ve had top of the line cars

You absolutely can sell it with expired registration. In fact, when selling a cheap old car, it's always a bad idea to leave the plates on it. I don't know how many times I've seen someone sell a car for $1,500 or less, only to have the buyer never register the car in their name, and pick up a load of parking tickets and red light tickets. To make sure the car gets transferred, insist on going to a currency exchange or a Secretary of State facility to make sure the proper paperwork is submitted.

I used to own an ‘87 two-tone rosebud LeBaron. It was sweet.

Had a six-disc changer in the trunk and everything.

My mom had what must of been a 89 convertible lebaron. Might of been an 88 as she got it around the time my brother was turning 16. It was quite the step up from 86 celebrity Eurosport that my brother inherited and then passed on to me. That wagon was a true piece of garbage, they never could figure out what was causing the service engine light to come on but Christ did that car run rough when it came on.

Aftermarket? I think that would have been a rare factory option in 1987.

I don’t remember. It might have. Sounds familiar. That was a lot of cars ago.

Bought it used around ‘91.

I ended up totaling that car in the mid-90s on the Dan Ryan going home from a work conference.

Nobody got hurt....except my sweet six disc changer.

I’d guess one was Blues Traveler and maybe some Dave Matthews Band. Probably a Sinatra or a Crosby from the disc sets.

If you’re implying that I dumped urine all over the Dan Ryan Expressway.....well...you wouldn’t be entirely wrong.

It wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last.

Post subject:  Re: car sale question

i sold it last night but i have a bad feeling i really screwed up. I did get cash though at least and it appears to be valid.
Guy came over last night to look at it, took it for a short drive, etc.
Said he works for a car dealer and on the side he looks for cars like this and then they re-sell them at auction. Made sense, he seemed like a really nice guy, his profile on Offer Up is basically 5 stars based on like 12 ratings and he had verified info according to Offer Up, had a few things for sale himself.
But i think it was because there was a lot going on - it was dark out, we're filling out paperwork on top of my recycling can just outside my garage, that I didn't realize he didn't get me complete information for me to send the notice of sale to the SOS- he didn't give me his complete address and only put "G&S Auto" on the bill of sale I had. I didn't look it over good, i only saw that it looked like it was filled out.
He had left at that point, so I messaged him through the app to send me the info and he said he would when he got home, and of course he didn't. I just message him again now.
I took the plates off , but i'm still quite concerned I don't have proper information to submit the sale information to the SOS
I figure i'll give him until the end of today to respond back to me and if he doesn't, i'll report him through the app and try and force them to give me his information as they obviously have it. Pretty mad at myself.

Beat yourself.

And then take yourself out for ice cream afterwards.
