You are an interesting guy ikesouth, and I really don't mean that in a good way.

So. There are 4 of us interested in getting fences. Wife and I finally settle on a quote we like .Neighbors balk at the price ( mid 4k) and one of them gets a "guy" who can do similiar fence for 2k less. We opt out of that because we priced even a mid grade fence and couldn't do better than $3500. Long and short of it ,their fence guy gives them the runaround (shocking) and hey, can we have your guys number blah blah. So guy comes out today and all 3 neighbors get a quote for 800 less than us because they all will share a common side between their yards which started with our yard as we are the first fence. Wife was against letting our immediate neighbor share ours but in the spirit of staying Neighborly i agreed . Didn't realize how much less everyone else would pay and I do resent being punished for being the guinea pig or patient zero in the process. If situation were reversed I'd tell the other neighbors who are paying less we have to pony up at least a hundo each to the original guy as that's not very fair. We will see how they handle it.

Not a lot of fences on this side of PA either (about a half a foot down, it's shale).
Though, I did install my own fence. My FIL and I did it in about five days. Day 1 to dig out the post holes (with the post hole digger) two days to let the conrete sit, then day 3 was putting up the frame, day 4 and five was installing the fence. I'm on 2/3 of an acre and we got it done for around 1800.
