I guess I wasn't in Joliet proper. I was more in the greater Joliet area. Interesting place. They have a hot dog stand they obviously want to call Jew Town Snacks but shorten it to J Town so as not to offend. However, I would guess there is not a single person who understands what J Town refers to so the variation makes the name irrelevant.

Jew Town was the name for Chicago's old Maxwell Street district. It was not a slur.

I remember as a kid being in the area and hearing some kid call it Jew Town. This was before I became a sophisticated gentleman and I was taken aback. My dad explained it to me...then bought me some slacks.

I have to admit I was in mixed (& thankfully easily amused) company back in 1990 and suggested taking some of the out of town students there. I really didn't think anything of it at first given that I'd never thought of it as a slur. I loved the misfit nature of the old place back then.

Fortunately a couple of Jewish classmates started laughing at the reactions of others. I really don't think I've said Jew Town publicly since then (until now).

I had a friend who had been in Michigan their entire life ask me to take them there when they came to visit in 2004. I imagine someone from Joliet would have to know.
