Remember that Budweiser commercial that lit up craft beer a few years back?

It mocked people who dared to smell their beer. Who cared to think critically about their beer. Who created such things as pumpkin peach ale.

Well, turns out Budweiser might have had a point.

After six hours wandering the aisles of the Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beer last weekend, I have concluded that craft beer is betraying itself. It is forgetting what beer should taste like.

Though FOBAB, held this year at the University of Illinois at Chicago Forum on Friday and Saturday, remains Chicago’s most essential beer festival, corners of it have become a showcase for beer that tastes more like dessert than beer. “Pastry stouts,” the industry calls them.

As with any trend or fad there is a point where it goes too far.

You just have to love people who get so upset over something that doesn't affect them in any way.

Candy Ass Beer:

A dark beer with a distinct offensive aroma. The hop character has significantly faded, and the palette is overrun by a distracting taste of candy and ass. The flavor I was most reminded of was ass as it’s not so much sweet as it is assey. The Ass imparts the taste of a hot southern swamp in July. If I pay attention, I can detect some malty sweetness, but it doesn’t make up for the damage of the ass. I’m not sure what the brewers’ intentions were with this. I just don’t think this beer is for me.

Rapidly expanding choice and options end up with some of them not being for everyone.

It's like if your town went from an Applebees and a Chilis to 30 different specialty restaurants. I may not want to eat at the place specializing in potato waffles but I'll enjoy the other good options and avoid the big chain restaurants.

I think it is awesome that we have you to put it into perspective as perfectly as you did.

Article is spot on, though I think the NEIPA thing is still more worrying in the long run. Bad adjunct stouts are still easily overshadowed by superior ones.

The NEIPA thing bugs me more insofar as breweries are now pursuing haze as an end in itself. This means you have a whole lot of shenanigans like breweries not even bothering to buy brite tanks, putting shit like flour in their beer, and releasing complete yeast bombs to the public, which seems to have adopted a mentality of the hazier the better. Just getting the appearance of haze has become the primary end, rather than a means to making a better tasting/smelling IPA.

You've used that line a few times and I have no idea what it means.

I'm not a beer expert.

Yorktown food court has a place http://www.spud-heads.com/

Pick from 11 ways your potato is prepared, then add some toppings and a sauce if you like.

It's not an expert opinion to think that craft beer has led to rapidly expanding choice and options. It means I have been in a beer store at least one time in my life.

I think it means you would have to have been in a beer store at least twice in your life.

I like NEIPAs much more than a regular IPA. I got over the hop bomb bullshit long ago. It wasn't for me.
