It sounds like Ken is in a prime location to join our NW Burbs club.

Soon it'll be time for Hawks @ Fox and Hound on Dundee

It's Red Apple, and that place sucks.

There's still the one there on the corner across from City Hall. Not 312, I think that's a little more pretentious. That's where Rahm eats. The other one.

Cardozo's?

I think that's Petro's. Worst hash browns in history at that place.

A few more Greek diner traits, now that I think about it:

- Toothpicks
- Peppermints
- Peppermint Patties for 25 cents
- A gumball machine
- Newspaper clippings about the diner when it opened
- When you enter and leave, you are granted by a man at the cash register who asks how your meal was. What he's really saying, though, is "Did the women screw anything up?" He is usually wearing a nice gold watch and has his hair slicked back. He also usually verbally advertises the Prime Rib special they are having Saturday night

Johnnie's Beef is fine. Though, I don't really *do* south of Northwest Highway Arlington Hts thing.

Rammy's has a good italian beef. Bunch of other great sandwiches also.

Huh, no kidding. Thought they only did subs. I'll give them a whirl.

I've boycotted subs in the area since Nemo's closed down next to Dengeo's 10 years or so ago. They had an awesome lunch special for high school kids. Loved that place...

I'll have to compare Rammy's to my current favorite Serinos Deli in Bloomingdale's. Place is legit.

The Lincoln on Lincoln was a favorite. The USS Monitor skillet was a classic. Butterfield's in Naperville (and I believe Scottsdale) is a high quality Greek Diner. They have actual berries in their fruit plates.

Get a room you two.

Preferably at a rundown motel with a Greek diner attached...free HBO.

  Spot on.

They just closed the Greek coffee shop by my house, Whistler's. It wasn't owned by Greeks though. It was Assyrian. A friend of mine asked me if I ever went to Whistler's. I said, "Yeah, all the time." He said, "You know the Assyrians no longer have a country, so now they all gather at Whistler's."

I miss the Lincoln too. Those gigantic soft drinks were great. I think one of my Greek friends is an investor in Butterfield's. At least the one on Dundee Road.

That's the Radical Italian Beef but it also has a pesto spread that I don't care for. Plus it costs more.

Just order the regular and add garlic spread. It's cheaper.

Mrs. Dr. Ken really likes the crab and seafood. I like the Classic Chicken as well.

1) Wag's crawled into its deathbed in 88 and died in 91 ... IMU knows nothing of Wag's ... what he thinks of as Wag's was instead a yet-to-be-properly-branded Shoney's

2) Wag's was great, but it was a lunch counter type place ... not in any way a so-called Greek joint

3) I have no idea how there's any argument about what a Greek joint is ... you either know it or you don't ... JORR clearly knows, for example ... leash probably does too

4) Long live supper clubs

5) leash, you can join GenX if you push a few brandy old fashioneds at a supper club my way some time ... and don't touch the carrot sticks or the cheese pate either, those are for me only

Also, somewhere I imagine City of Fools has been to ... http://www.sorrentosranch.com/home/

Having a gyro platter on the menu doesn't make it a Greek diner.

That is a Greek diner though. My partner's Greek buddy from high school owns that place.

I wouldn't even say that a Greek diner has to be run by Greeks. It's just a style of restaurant. A coffee shop really. Menu has omelets and other egg dishes, open faced turkey, beef, and ham with gravy and mashed potatoes, and burger and other sandwiches that are offered "deluxe", i.e. with a cup of soup.

JORR gets it. Most diners are Greek, in my experience, and most are actually run by Greeks. I think I'm jumping ship to Gen X.

Also, there is usually a card clipped inside the menu with a list of daily specials that can be ordered "a la carte" (with soup or salad, choice of potato, vegetable, and bread basket) or as a "complete dinner" (with tomato juice or soup, salad or cottage cheese, choice of potato, vegetable, bread basket, and dessert).

The man knows what he's talking about. The dessert is usually choice between tapioca pudding or a scoop of ice cream. A slice of the pie or cake they have featured in the glass case out front is extra.

Fun fact: That building used to be a Wag's in the 80's.

No. What I call old school dining is a place that serves steaks and chops, fried chicken, and fish. They often offer a relish tray. There is usually a bar. Sometimes they have dishes that are prepared tableside, like de-boning Dover sole, prepared Steak Diane, or flaming Cherries Jubilee.
