Wife and I went there and brought the median age down from 62 to 61.75.

Haven't been there in forever...it's definitely an OLD crowd.

Nite 'N Gale in Highwood has been around forever. Ditka used to hang there as I recall.

Italian Village in the city is a classic.

Ray Radigan's...a famous supper club up near Kenosha on Sheridan Rd...did close down a year or two ago. Ray's granddaughter Mary Radigan wanted to spice up the menu a little but couldn't find agreement from the old timers...so she shut it down.

All great places. I didn't know Ray Radigan's had closed. Another one bites the dust. There was also that great place down near Waukegan Harbor that has been closed for awhile now. I can't remember its name.

In the same vein as the Anvil Club that denis mentioned, there was the Forge Club on Milwaukee Avenue. My former father-in-law was a member and we went there all the time when we worked together and had an office in Libertyville.

The one down by the harbor in Waukegan was Mathon's.

Louie's in Waukegan is still up and running and old school as can be.

Libertyville used to have the Northern Chalet.

Does the Golden Steer on Roosevelt in Forest Park qualify? Never had anything other than the Prime Rib special. Decent enough for the price

That's a short drive. It wouldn't take much gas!

Stopping in for a meal at the Waukegan Yacht Club is like stepping back in time 40 or 50 years.

I just ate there on Saturday. I thought it was great. Yeah, you don't get a char on the steak like you would on a million degree broiler at Chicago Cut, but so what? That isn't the point. I will say the house Cabernet left a lot to be desired. I'll stick with Black and soda next time.

oh, i should've clarified, the food was worth the price. the french onion soup--lick the bowl clean delicious and a meal itself. A double CC with an Old style back doesn't cost any more than at the corner bar. you're right, the steak wasn't what i like. they don't seem to cook steak rare enough in general. and i'm not a send it back and do over type person; cuz I don't like pubes and snot on my steak. plus i'm happy someone else is cooking food for me and serving it to me.

but the not in a good way part referred to the crowd. my beaner gf thought the people there were racist.

Larry's in Plainfield and "Plainfield Delight" are both very good. The best Greek diners force you to have soup and also bring enough random bread to feed a family for a year.

There is a good one in Arlington Hts we used to go to, too... right down the road from the One Arlington North building off 53.

Yanni's....closed about 5 years ago.

Well, fuck me runnin', James...

You guys aren't talking about the same place.

Yanni's was at AH Road and Algonquin.

Yanni's was more of an upscale seafood restaurant. Not a typical "Greek joint."

Yeah, that's not what I'm talking about. Sorry, Jimmy. The one we went to was close to Wilke Rd.

There was also a good Greek diner in Bloomingdale several years ago that I can't find now. It was right on the corner of Army Trail and Bloomingdale Road, in front of the Osco's and next to the Blockbuster (probably not there anymore either).

Another good one is Sun Mist in Elmhurst. Best breakfast I've ever had.

I was partial to "Greek Village Restaurant" on Golf in Schaumburg but that place switched owners and names and is supposedly not as good. I haven't been since the switch.

I usually just end up going to Roditys downtown for Greek. And Mykonos is always an option.

On topic: Supper clubs sound terrible.

TV dinner cuisine but it takes 3 hours instead of 5 minutes.

I can only remember going to one in my adult life and I have lived in SE Wisconsin for the last 17 years. The Hob Nob in Racine is kind of your classic supper
club with really gaudy decor and a beautiful view of Lake Michigan. I went probably 7-8 years ago and it was just alright. Went with two other couples which is
the best way to go to one of these places.

Yeah, supper clubs are best left in the past. Last time I went to one was about ten years ago. It was on some lake in Walworth County that wasn't Geneva Lake, so either Delavan or Como, probably. There was paneling and cigarette smoke and bad burgundy carpeting. I think I had ribs that weren't very good.

I've already stipulated that Millennials don't care for them. Regardless, supper clubs are great. Relaxed and leisurely dining without the need to constantly check one's smartphone to find out the next place we're going.

I once visited a supper club up near Hayward.
It was a Wednesday and it was jammed.
I asked the hostess why the place was so packed.
She pointed to a bowl of pink goo on the salad bar and said, "They
come from miles around on Wednesdays. That's the day we serve our
famous bologna salad on the salad bar."
I swear to God this is true.

Greek diners are kind of "old school" dining. In twenty years, I think there'll be far less of them.

That's one thing I did love about living on the East Coast. Their zoning laws prohibited chains outside of very specific commercial areas with shopping malls. We wouldn't have been able to go to many chains even if we wanted to. Everything was Greek diners or local chop houses. Then we moved to Naperville. :)

 You don't have to go to a supper club for that. However, I like the type of places you're talking about. They remind me of simpler times with hotels that advertised having HBO on the billboard.

The décor also reminds me of the casino HST is in in "Fear and Loathing" when he huffs the ether.

But I love little hole-in-the-wall Greek diners, and I love dining without people checking smartphones. (I haven't a smartphone to check in the first place.) I just never got into the whole southeastern Wisconsin supper club thing. There was one in Lake Geneva with a fake fireplace. Come on.

Well, the typical modern restaurant is loud, with tables packed close together, or even, God forbid, communal seating. And they are usually looking to turn those tables over as quickly as possible. To me, "old school" refers to the manner of dining as much as the type of food and/or decor.
