Ha yeah I guess so. I go to fresh thyme, standard market, Whole Foods and the jewel. I heard a petes fresh mkt is opening where the Kmart was on rt 83. Don't know if that's true or not.

Do they charge you to grill the meat? I know people eat there and do the oyster bar but if I'm going out to dinner I prefer it's not to a grocery store.

Pete's is finally under construction at Plainfield/83. I suspect they needed other tenants before they could really start.

I find that a rotation of Pete's, Whole Foods, and Walmart works pretty well for me. Pete's for produce and ethnic stuff, Whole Foods for meat in small portions (as opposed to buying 5 pounds of steaks at Costco when I live alone) and for other specialty stuff, and Walmart for major brands for the center of the store and mass perishables such as cottage cheese.

Right now, though, I'm gone 5-6 days a week for a while between work and the out of town girlfriend, so I haven't been to a grocery store since she was in town three weeks ago.

No, she prefers to take care of them herself.

I always told my wife their pricing isn't that great. Their newest think is to sale just 12 packs of pop for the price of a 24 pack. Also, good luck trying to find a 24 pack of anything pop-related.

The Jewels always has some pop on sale. I always felt Jewells pricing was reasonable.

ok, now that has my attention. That's what I meant by my original question - what are their gimmicks to make me willing to pay extra for the can of baked beans I really don't need to buy today but don't feel like making a special trip tomorrow to buy at Walmart?

- grilled meats
- $3 beers with open carry in the store

The full stores are like this.

They opened one in Glenview (Northbrook) right off the Tri state with a sushi bar, bar, bbq pit, full grill, etc.

The Gurnee one has the grill, but that's about it...the ones that used to be Dominicks are very basic.

That one by Astellas you're referring to is ridiculous. That's an example of too damn big unless you get to know the layout.

I like "small" groceries where you can bing bong boom out. The Garden Fresh on Hintz was my jam. Harvest Fresh is my new go-to for SOLID staples and easy exit.

That's the one. I work right by Palwaukee and go there for lunch every now and again. I don't venture onto the grocery side, though.

So basically, the guy who ran Dominick's left Dominck's and went up there and opened up this brand as part of Roundy's, and then Dominick's closes so he invests back in Chicago and puts in a place that is essentially the same fucking high-end Dominick's which originally closed?

Brilliant.

Bob Mariano, the former Dominicks CEO just retired. Roundys/Marianos is now owned by Kroger which is the largest grocery chain in the country with various stores by different names across the entire country.

Kroger has 2781 Supermarket Stores across the US.

The cost of soda is preposterous. I have to check Meijer's and da Jewels sale papers to see who's gonna shove it up my moon a bit more gently. Plus, you usually have to buy 3 or 4 at a time to get the sale price ... hey buddy, you can get 3 twelvers for $10, or you can buy just one of 'em for $6 - such a deal! At least Meijer's will have their generic sodas pretty consistently in the $3/12 range ... pretty good diet grape, good enough diet orange ... in a pinch their knockoff diet Mt. Dew can get the job done.

I agree that they've been pushing up the price of "pop" locally but if you check out the sales outside of Chicago you'll see we've got it pretty good in that regard.

If you're at Mariano's, why are you buying the pre-packaged stuff?

Just inspect what you want at the butcher.

After shopping at Mariano's I learned to just go to a real butcher. You do realize Mariano's butchers package that crappy meat too.

I think you've missed the point.

Anyway, going to a butcher is a solid choice.

I get the point...to a point. I expected the quality of Mariano's to be consistently good. I've found their pre-packaged meat to be purposely mis-leading. Just that simple. I could go to the butcher counter but why should I have to?...or more importantly why would I?

The Whole Foods in Evanston on Green Bay Road has a bar with a TV and $4 pints of most Evanston (and others) craft beers, plus hot food options such as pizza and burritos. I've considered going to watch a game there.

I've gone to a couple (Garth) butchers in the area, and every time, the food sucks. Mariano's Italian sausage stuffed with green peppers and mozzarella FTW!

Atleast Whole foods sausages are more "clean".

Coscto is the only place I'll buy milk (for both price and freshness), especially now that they've fixed their jugs.

Indeed. They are more rounded now and aren't as prone to leakage.
