Brauhaus closing Dec 11 is just another in a succession of old school German restaurants going kaput. I don't understand this. You would think with the trend towards appreciating good beer and the universality of the cuisine, I would think these would be flourishing.

The only ones I can think of in and close to Chicago are Laschett's, Edelweiss and Resi.

I'm no beer expert but I'm pretty sure that German beers have been hit pretty hard by American exceptionalism in beer making. They had like 500 years on us and we caught up and surpassed them because guys with beards had garages, free time, and a desire to normalize their beer drinking.

This is like a plate o' shrimp. I just had this conversation with my aunt this morning. She told me that Mader's is the last German restaurant in Milwaukee too.

There was an old german place out here in the country. Can't remember what its name was. It was okay but they decided they would move to the big city (Lasalle/Peru) and I think they went out of business shortly after. I thought they had a decent sausage platter and the spaetzle and schnitzel wasn't half bad. Didn't go very often as it wasn't exactly a short haul.

The Oktoberfest in Lincoln Square is so popular with the hipster crew that they expanded it to one in May and then a mini one in December

German cuisine is not the best. Very heavy with the starches.

Though, Chicago is lacking in German beer halls. I've been to a few "hipster-ized"/modernized German beer halls in Philly and New York. Communal benches with German and US beer. Simple kitchen serving pretzels and sausages. That'd do well.

The most popular German beers (Beck's and Warsteiner) here suck. Hofbrau Munich's are very good IMO, but hard to find. One downside of the craft beer revolution is that there's less shelf space for good import beers while the shitty ones like Corona, Heineken and Stella still get pushed.

I did stop by a hipster beer hall in Brooklyn last summer, agreed one of those would do great somewhere on the north side.

That's because German beer sucks. Most European beer sucks.

There was good German in St Pete. In the QCA there is a real good place. Like a real German beer ball inside and out. Decent food and beer. Called Beer Stube.

I like many styles of beers. Stouts, porters, sours, etc. I just don't care for most of the hops and malts used in Euro beers. That means more skunky lagers and pilserners for you. Give me some fresh, American beer every time.

There is a craft beer version of just about any big name beer out there that is much better.
