why you eating steak in New Orleans? Of the list of 20 or so foods the place is known for, steak is nowhere to be found.

I had a good ribeye at Galatoire's a few weeks ago. With great Brabant potatoes. After dozens of oysters and pounds of crawfish a steak was a welcome change of pace.

after two-tree days of eating nothing but fish, a man needs meat.

The Ruth Chris in New Orleans is phenomenal. If you can business expense it, it's a must stop.

Also, the Rib Room at the Royal Orleans is a good place for beef. The first time I ever went to New Orleans was in 1971 with my dad. I was seven years old. We ate at a bunch of good spots. Italian at Ruffino's and we ate prime rib at the Rib Room. I remember my dad tipped the waiter five bucks which was a lot in that time. The check was probably less than $20.

I sat for this portrait at Jackson Square:

Image

When we were walking through the Quarter there was a huge photo on the side of a building of a woman wearing nothing but high-heeled pumps. I asked my dad why she had shoes on. He said, "There's nothing dirty about the human body. The human body is beautiful. Especially the female body. It's the shoes that make her dirty."

Why the fuck would I go all the way to New Orleans for Ruth's Chris when there's one on Skokie Boulevard?

Do you also avoid the Olive Garden in Times Square?

The chain was originally founded in New Orleans, and they do the best Sazarec outside of The Roosevelt.

I generally avoid all Olive Gardens including the one I can walk to from my house. Somewhat ironically, I just returned from eating the $6.99 soup and salad lunch there today.

I took my son down there on the overnight train for his 12th birthday. We stayed on the north side of the French Quarter so anytime we went anywhere we had to go via Bourbon Street in some shape or form. We didn't see anything completely outrageous but I'm sure he had many "eye opening" experiences.

When you can't eat shellfish it limits your options.

I saw a homeless pants down jerking it on Bourbon at 1 in the afternoon on a Monday not long ago. Entire French Quarter is not very child friendly.

The last time I was in Toronto there was a tent city near downtown and it seemed very friendly to homeless people. I was walking down the street behind a guy and his daughter who was maybe 12 or 13. In one of the doorways there was a homeless guy whacking it like a demon. The little girl and I both saw it, but the dad didn't at first. He had the girl by the hand and he must have felt her hesitate as she probably felt compelled to stop and watch. He turned and looked at the guy, became really disgusted, and dragged his daughter away quickly. As her dad was dragging her quickly away the girl looked back and made eye contact with me and we were both laughing.

new question: If you can't eat seafood why bother going to New Orleans?

I've never been and have no desire to go, but isn't the whole point of going there the food? That's pretty much the only thing adults talk about when trying to tell me New Orleans isn't the stinking shithole it appears to be from afar.

Business trips. Group trip where I had no say in the destination. New Orleans has a ton of history worth seeing for a trip as a stand alone reason. And I am not allergic to whiskey, wine or cans of Dixie. It's not a bad time to be walking outside in 77 and sunny when it's snowing back home.

Secanted on the great.

And Shakes, WfR is correct, there are a million interesting things to do/see in New Orleans, some that even don't involve seafood and drink.

Ghost tours are kind of lame but also kind of enjoyable. I liked the one I did in New Orleans. I enjoyed the bus tour that took you down to the 9th ward and the graveyards too. Cafe DuMond surprisingly matched the insane hype.

Bourbon Street is mostly bad though you have to have a drink there. The thing I remember the most is how many holes there were in the sidewalks.

I don't eat any seafood so the food options for me weren't great though there were some pretty good meals I had there. The casino was fun for a couple hours too.

Yeah, they can be fun with the right guide, the right amount of booze, and the right amount of people (10-15). But man, they're out of control now. After dark in the Quarter there's one on every corner with about 30-40 people.

No, many are made with chicken(or rabbit) and sausage.

I thought I read that New Orleans improved its smell by doing something about restaurants pouring their grease into the sewers where it would go rancid.

Yeah. There is a tour on every street non-stop. You can't see the oldest cemetery (St. Louis #1) without going on a tour anymore. It's not as bad as the beggars, but you get hustled to go on a tour quite a bit as well.

Ding. I'm allergic to shellfish. This is a small portion of what I ate whilst living there. It's a great city, and a crappy city rolled into one. I loved it.

The music's not bad either. And one can take a time out from the Bourbon street wackiness. https://www.neworleans.com/plan/streets ... en-street/

I am guessing I have been to NOLA at least 10 times, all different times of the year. Never tire of it. The stench does not bother me. But not a place I would take kids.

And while going to a steak place there would not be my first choice I do recall dining at Ruth Chris once because of work. It was good.

It does not seem like a very "livable" city, when you live in a tourist destination everyone else is on vacation and doesn't care about the time. What was it like?

I guess I'm going back early next month. If you have any updates, please add.

I'll only be in for casual dining. Po boy places would be fine, as I start on a Sunday and my favorite, Domilise's is closed. Staying in the garden district near the universities.
