Tracy's is a cool bar with great oysters. The Bulldog is a nice on tap beer bar. Both in the garden district.

This is correct. The Charbroiled oysters are unbelievably good. Garlic butter heaven.

Forgive me if I am wrong about visit but I thought your son decided elsewhere already.

Best Oysters in the City are at Royal Palace. We were in town for five days and ate there three times.

Liuzza's by the track if the child is going to Delgado to learn how to build floats. Johnny's po boys or Masperos if the school of hard knocks in the quarter are more your speed. All good and right priced. Still rated highly after MANY years.

Ghost tours are kind of lame but also kind of enjoyable. I liked the one I did in New Orleans. I enjoyed the bus tour that took you down to the 9th ward and the graveyards too. Cafe DuMond surprisingly matched the insane hype.

Bourbon Street is mostly bad though you have to have a drink there. The thing I remember the most is how many holes there were in the sidewalks.

I don't eat any seafood so the food options for me weren't great though there were some pretty good meals I had there. The casino was fun for a couple hours too.

po boys, red beans and rice, andouille dishes, muffalata, gumbo are just some of the great non seafood offerings of NOLA

Ding. I'm allergic to shellfish. This is a small portion of what I ate whilst living there. It's a great city, and a crappy city rolled into one. I loved it.

It does not seem like a very "livable" city, when you live in a tourist destination everyone else is on vacation and doesn't care about the time. What was it like?

The locals were a lot of fun. Completely different in all respects than much of my experiences here. I was blue collar. Quite a hodgepodge of people with varying backgrounds that enjoyed life and fit together really well. You'd have to live it. I can't explain it better.

Seems like race/class is a little less of a big deal down there, but of course being a white guy on vacation, I'm not sure that's true.

The only problem with New Orleans is that the primary activity is eating and drinking and if you think anything more than a Friday to Sunday is needed, your heart begs to differ!

The decision has not been made yet. There is a whole round of schools that will have an answer in March.

Either way, it's nice to be wanted

My low standing blue collar class and below were pretty well crushed. Race played a big role in that. But us common folk that knew one another all got along great. That was my experience at least. The hotel I worked at had two (2) summer parties. It was clear based on the food and entertainment who was supposed to go to each party. It was left unsaid. I couldn't believe it.

yeah, the social dynamics of the South are impossible for an outsider to to "get". It's kind of creepy and gives me an eewy vibe. My wife knows some Memphis elites. Not sure why on earth you'd want to be a Memphis elite, but that's what it is. Was thinking NO might be a bit different.

NO is a different kind of town. It's an international destination with international industries. There are probably old money south type enclaves but there is new oil money, shipping money etc. from all over the country and world that shake up the hierarchy.

Always nice to dream but it's deeper than that. Hopefully you're right. My buddy was head of an incubating center for start up companies in NO. I won't bore you the details. He disagrees with your assessment. Your child will most likely be taking classes from him if he chooses to go.

Tulane is a great campus. Seems like an ideal place to spend four years, as long as the weather holds.

In New Orleans as I type, Gumbo Shop is still good, and Cafe Beignet > Cafe Du Monde.

Went to the Pelicans game on Friday night and who do I run into there... Wendell Pierce (Bunk from The Wire). Decided to go with a "love your work" even with every fiber of my being wanting to say "Shhhiiiiiittttttttt" but I'm sure he hears that all the time.

This was a very quick business type trip.

I went to Parkway and Domilise's for po boys, Du Monde and Drago's.

Parkway gets a lot of press. I wasn't all that impressed. They had a line out the door at 8 pm on a Sunday so either they have good pr or I am missing something. I love Domolise's. Du Monde is as reliable as ever. I love the stuff. Drago's food was fantastic. The ambience was that of a place designed to trap conventioneers paying from a corporate account. I ordered a dozen oysters for the table. Everyone was bitching that they hated oysters so I thought I'd have them to myself and only ordered soup as a meal. MFers put those things down about 2 seconds after they hit the table and I was left with just a taste. Even my youngest, who is a picky eater, was sopping up the basket with bread. I was a good dad and didn't complain.

Weed is legal in NOLA now, even on the street (it seems). It is depressing watching locals, including people just coming off work, standing around on Canal getting stoned beyond belief on a work night. The entire city reeks of pot, which is a step up for the quarter. I really hope Chicago doesn't end up like this.
