at restaurants, hot dogs will wind up on the sandwich portion of the menu, while burgers have their own. if you want to call a hot dog a sandwich, i guess it's your prerogative. but don't expect people to not laugh their ass off if you say "i'm craving a sandwich. i want a hot dog!"

I have a simple rule for this. If you can insert the word sandwich in the title of the food and it doesn't sound stupid then it's a sandwich.

For instance,

Rueben sandwich
Turkey club sandwich
tuna salad sandwich

All sound fine like that so all are sandwiches.

Hot dog sandwich
hamburger sandwich

Both sound like it's not even English anymore so definitely not sandwiches.
