I'll be using it for the local ribfest, so it'll need to be wood/charcoal burning, nothing mechanical.

Heading to see Dan Marguerite at the Backyard BBQ store next week.

Any recs?

Love the big green egg. It is pricey though.

Agree on this, I have the Kamado Joe, love it for smoking and all other things cooking.

Big Green Egg is very tempting. I'm sure I'll get one when I do my outdoor kitchen next year.

There's one called "The Good One" which looks perfect. Very ugly, very lame website, great functionality.

Not to come off like this, but any ceramic grill at an expensive price is going to be a great instrument.

A buddy of mine has a Yoder smoker, and it is fantastic--all 300+ pounds of it. Nice capacity, easy to use. I've been thinking about buying the Cheyenne or Wichita model.

These make more sense than the barrel offset smokers.

look at the oklahoma joe bandera on the economical side. i used one for a long time and you can burn coal, sticks, chunks, whatever in it.

if you got he cash, look at the backwoods smoker brand. the Chubby is all you need. I had one for a few years it was probably the best charcoal/wood smoker i've ever had and regret selling it.

I went with "The Good One" MARSHALL

Cleaned it with a good burn on Wednesday.

Tried it out last night on some chuck and pork loin for chili and some chunked slab bacon for beans.

It holds temp like a champ.

Got a nice discount from Dan at the Backyard BBQ Store and it was drop shipped to my door in 3 days.

Shipping weight: 497lbs

leaking smoke isn't the problem so much (i think most people oversmoke their food anyway) but heat loss. what makes a smoker good is its ability to hold in the temp allowing you way more control. and longer burn times without messing with it. leaking smoke is just a sign that you are leaking heat which is worse.

Thicker steel also helps retain heat, making it easier to hold or recover when you're opening and closing the lid.

I love my Smokey Mountain. It's a labor of love, but it produces great results.
