Very good, tiny local brewery in Highwood. They just bought Ballast Point, which sold for $1bil 5 years ago. Owned by a couple of local guys, one a Brit and one Australian. My cousin is their next door neighbor. Trying to wrap my head around a jump up like this. Good for them!

I've had their pilsner...it's not bad. There was one other beer of theirs I had that was just not good. Don't see a lot of their stuff around though.

Kind of a crazy purchase.

I like just about everything I have had from Ballast Point.

I hope they don't get caught in the downward trend of craft beers.

Donati's pizza, at the corner of Waukegan Rd and Rt 176, has had them on tap for a while...most are pretty tasty.

Did Ballast Point burn through 9 figures, or is this a way to take ownership outside of the US?

Seems more like a way for Constellation to dump off something they didn't want to put money into, or were losing money from so they could put more into their Modelo and Corona brands, as well as the wine and hard seltzer markets they're going after.

Constellation overpaid for the brand and never really got a handle on what to do with Ballast Point. I'm gonna say these guys grabbed it for a whole lot less than a billion.

Kings and Convicts is pretty good. Nothing wrong with Ballast Point at all. I'm guessing this was a steal.

I'm guessing it was a steal as well. I have a couple ideas on who may have backed this.

Green Flash and Ballast Point screwed themselves with overly ambitious expansion and changing tastes. Both grew exponentially during the early years of the craft beer explosion when West Coast IPAs were highly sought after. Hop bombs were all the rage. Now its all about session ales, NEIPAs and pastry stouts.

Ballast Point was ahead of the curve by pricing Sculpin at the $15+ range. Issue was equivalent beers that were just as good or better like Two-Hearted, Fresh Squeezed, Celebration were becoming cheaper...

Ballast Point needs a lot of fixing to compete with the Sierra Nevadas, Founders, Bells, Stones...or downsize itself back to a regional craft brewer

We were in discussions with Constellation, until JORR had a bad dat at the OTB.

A real bad day.

Sincerely,
Management

90% of all craft beer sucks. It's just dipshits throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks flavor-wise. Only 10% is actually a tasteful beer product.

Whoosh. No, screwed themselves as in they're an afterthought today. Four years ago as you're referencing they were premier breweries

The name reminds me of the 1969 caper movie, Crooks and Coronets, featuring Telly Savalas and Cesar Romero.

I liked Green Flash. I was meh on Ballast Point because I don't drink IPA. Similar to why I don't give a fuck about Three Floyd's.

Nah, when I was at Green Flash, I was drinking some Berliner Weisse that they had just tapped. Probably the best of that style that I've had. Some kind of experimentation series. They they expanded like crazy and fucked themselves over.

Kings & Convicts was able to pull off this week’s acquisition of Ballast Point thanks to the investment of wine industry magnate Richard Mahoney, Kings & Convicts co-founder Brendan Watters acknowledged Wednesday.

Fuck Green Flash for ruining Alpine.

I hope this Ballast Point news means fresh Sculpin again.
