You know, lab-grown meat. It would probably help the environment, too, but it would put cowboys out of work, and since a lot of them are white--well, perhaps I've said too much.

The article you linked says it tastes like butt, due to no naturally occurring animal fats.

I'm not sure I could ever eat lab grown meat. Sorry to disappoint.

Regarding pop, I've been able to reduce my intake to no more than a max of 20 oz a day, and since I don't drink it every day now, I'm probably averaging 8-16oz per day. Maybe less. A couple years ago I was buying 3-4 12 packs and they lasted me two weeks, plus fast food pop.

I couldnt imagine drinking 5-6 cans of coke a day. That sounds awful

At my peak I was drinking a 2 liter a day of Diet Coke.

That's more hardcore than anything I've ever done. My cocaine habit 5 years ago was probably healthier.

Yup. Barely made it out alive.

If someone brings in donuts to work, I'll have a couple with coffee, if there are some left at noon, a couple more, then clean up any leftovers late afternoon. Seven donuts a day is stupid, but there's some kind of trigger from my Grandmother saying "Clean it up, no leftovers" , like a Depression-era mentality. The other guys just walk by the box after one donut.

Probably eating more meat as I try to stay away from carbs when I can. I have been trying to shed some weight but not much luck. Lifting a lot lately. I’m 6’1 260 right now. Donated blood yesterday and my resting pulse was 58 and blood pressure was 114/82. I know I need to shed the weight but I’m feeling as good as I have in years. Just need to cut back on portions I guess.

I've increased mine. In fact, all I eat now is beef, salt, and water. My digestion is great. Added bonuses- my bloodlust has never been higher. Vote Trump! And I get so hard now that Miss Pis screams for mercy when I haven't even gotten warmed up. I'm ready to take on Cathy Newman and Regular Reader in the Panthathlon at the same time.

I've cut way back on fried food, snacks and meat.

Like Rick, I had gotten up to two liters of Coke a day. It's a habit I didn't have before I went away to school in Atlanta. Unfortunately pop was so ridiculously cheap (think 15-20 cents a can in the mid 80s) and dorm water was so disgusting it became my drink of choice. When I came home I broke the habit somewhat, at least until I moved out to the south suburbs where tap water tasted toxic and bottled water seemed outrageously expensive.

I broke the habit again and got caffeine withdrawal headaches so bad, I thought they were migraines. Oddly, I cheered on the short lived pop tax because I wouldn't spend the money. I was in Jewel the other day in the soft drinks aisle and noticed that they are now selling pop at ridiculously low prices...if you buy in outrageous bulk. Think 5-8 two liter bottle requirements. Shocked by the dope dealer similarity, I kept it moving straight to the water section.

I went vegetarian for fifty days as kind of a gimmick, really just to get me to try new stuff and be outside my comfort zone. Could not imagine forsaking cheese and eggs though, that just seems punitive.

Again, if I could do the veggie thing, I would. I just can't stand the effing taste of that stuff. My palate is really limited.

It's inconvenient that humans only maximized brain capacity only after becoming meat eaters.

I don't look at a chimp and animal planet eating a small gazelle and consider it a moral question.

Each thing on this planet lives at the expense of another. It's kind of a shitty reality but it IS reality. On the other hand, each thing might only exist BECAUSE of its utility to another.

One can give life to animals and give them a pleasant existence on Earth and then eat them. This is not immoral. Problem is many of the animal production systems have become truly barbaric. Chicken barns are particularly unpleasant.

true, technology and efficient management has made meat cheap and plentiful. seems to be backfiring as young generations are avoiding meat specifically for these breakthroughs in meat production.

I dont think this dynamic is limited to food production. There is a revolt starting to brew against technological breakthroughs in a lot of places.

I'm trying to eat less meat. Mostly failing. I agree with Krauthammer's take:

I raised cattle. they seemed happy as can be. Would have been a shame had they never had the chance to exist. Same with the hens we have now. they love doing their hen things all day long. but when their time's up, its time to go. I took care of you, now you'll take care of me.

Agreed. I could easily go to vegetarian for a while but to give up bread, cheese, butter, or anything else made with those ingredients would be stupid.

I think that's the conclusion that Omnivore's Dilemma would lead most people to. But as you say above, the manner of raising them makes a difference.

There's a chicken "farm" less than 2 miles from my house. The hens live in an old Chevy Suburban. Hyperlocal, man.

LOL. What do you think happens to every animal involved in that entire process? They get killed. Don't forget all the baby male chicks that get ground up into dog food since there's no need for them. What do you think happens to the male calves? They go to petting farms for bulls?
