Sad topic, but I'll start it out with the announcement that one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago has closed down. Fahlstrom's Fish Market on Belmont. Owner Glenn Fahlstrom announced today that he was closing the restaurant because he doesn't want to be in the restaurant business with all the COVID restrictions. Between 50% capacity, exposing his employees to risk and all the things they have to do just to make the place safe for customers he says that is not something he wants to be a part of.

He did say he'll be back eventually so maybe that means he'll open a new place at some point. Real shame, best fish/seafood/cereal place on the north side.

Captain Crunch was a big seller?

yep. Very unique place that was a diner/fish house. He had about 15 different fish dishes on the menu + a full diner menu + an entire wall of cereal boxes.

Sometimes he would fuse them together and have a cereal crusted fish dish.

He also owned Glenn's Diner on Montrose which was pretty much the exact same, but he left after a fight with his partner.

we've lost a great chinese place and a place that makes one of my favorite pizzas and has better wings than most places in the quad cities.

It's odd that this thread was started by shakes. One of the biggest cheerleaders of "lock everything down" is now sad-sad that all his favorite restaurants are going under.

Anecdotally, it seems to be pretty close to the 10-15% per year failure rate they've always had.

Reduced hours seem to be common though. It seems as if restaurants now can operate with a 5 day work week.

Over 100,000 restaurants permanently closed just in 2020.

That statistic includes temporary closures too.

It's also very hard to find the number that close per year on average using the same metrics. It's always how 10-15% close per year.

As I said though, anecdotally, and it may be different for you or others, it's still really easy to find the exact same number of restaurant options as it was in 2019. Some have gone and some have popped up like it's always been.

The concept of capitalism is great, but late stage American corporatocracy isn’t sustainable.
