What are some "rules" you follow or important skills for a buyer for a business to have? I have to write a paper.

Identify suitable suppliers/manufacturers
Manage stock levels
Negotiate prices, quantities and delivery times

3. Understanding how to add and delete products and/or services over time. For example, should TSam get into catering if it requires delivery?

As an old example of my point #2, many of my dad's purveyors used to have a minimum delivery size, or product size was too big. So sometimes he'd just stop at the old Dominick's on South Blvd in Evanston and load up on sale items. For example, if canned corned beef hash was on sale, he'd buy 30 cans. Or if he was there and saw fresh chicken legs on sale, he'd buy enough to make two days' worth of specials.

Today, he'd be doing that at Sam's Club or Costco instead.

I found logistics to be the biggest factor for me. If they could manage the pipeline, get me shit when they said so, manage the truckers, etc. that's mostly what I cared about. Running out of inventory and shutting down a plant was 1000X worse than saving a few bucks here or there.

Also, on the people side:
*Hire the right people and let them do their job.
*Inspect what you expect. What gets measured gets done.
*Be consistent.
*Don't make every decision. Punt that football back to the person closest to the problem. "What would you do?"
*Keep your family out of it.
*Don't try to teach ducks to climb trees. It will frustrate both you and the duck. In other words do not waste your time on people who cannot or will not do the job.
*Be accessible. Ask questions. implement suggestions.
*Don't force "the customer is always right" myth. It's not true and only hurts your credibility with those that deal with customers. The customer may not always be right but they will always be well served.
