I plan on sampling the five places with Grayslake addresses Mon-Friday this week. Chicago style dog and a medium coke.

Sammies, Roost 83, Dog N Suds, Twisted Burger, & The Freeze.

Sammie's is always good. Owned by a pretty good buddy of mine.

I never liked the dogs at Sammies, but they make a solid gyro.

Dog n Suds is a favorite of mine, but I like the coney dog from there.

This is a great thread cuase it's close to home

Make sure you hit up Scotty's in Round Lake Park.
I like Sammie's but have found the Lake Villa location to be a bit inconsistent. Few times at the Grayslake spot were fantastic.

The best in the area have been gone for a while:
- Scott Dogs in Lake Villa
- Slott's Hots in Libertyville
- Home Depot in Gurnee

I can sympathize, my local spots changed hands decades ago and it's been a struggle ever since. I still plan on a stop at Jimmy' s on Pulaski anytime I'm close by on the west side

What is a salad dog? Do you just order a regular hotdog, then dig thru their garbage to find lettuce as a topping?

I appreciate the suggestions...but those other joints will have to wait. My plan is the five places in Grayslake...

R-Dogs, Scotty's, Big Jack's, Lily's, Sammie's Round Lake, Fratello's, & Leo's Chicago Grill, are on the futures list.

Hot Dog stand aficionados are dangerously close on the douche-bag scale to Craft Beer aficionados

R-Dogs has been around for a LOOOOONG time. It's decent but Sammie's better.

I've driven by Fratello's for 20 years and still never stopped...guess I need to do that.

Scotty's is owned by a friend form HS....(I know you're happy for me). They're legit.

I think if you've ever said:

That's too hoppy or I don't like stouts. You might be a beerdouche.

 Oh

I actually do not like stouts. I enjoy a good IPA or Hefe, but I absolutely do not consider myself a beer douche because a cold Coors Light or High Life can absolutely hit the spot at times.

The spot that beer should be hitting is the garbage.
Life is too goddamn short for crappy beer

It’s not even that I had a place ever but I did enjoy the Greek fare at the stand near my apartment on ridge back in...shit, 95/96.. but frankly, I was starving about every time I went there after work. Hotdogs, I mean, Portillo’s is fine (although I’m more a beef and cheddar guy there) and we have those nearby in Peoria and Davenport but gyro’s man... or even a damn good Greek salad.. just have to grill what my mom use to make and put on pita when I was growing up.. or a reasonable proximity.

My sister in law visited a few weeks back and left behind a couple silver bullets so,I consumed them after a couple long days in field. they are fine but I doubt Ill,probably, continue my long trend of not buying much of the light beers. Don’t mind lagers but need a bit more flavor.

I think that Chet said it best, the older Greek families ran the great places as well as possible and banked enough cash for their kids to go to college and then sell the stands. I know that is what happened in part around here.
