Shredded are my least favorite but all hash browns are great. Just don't put ketchup on them or I will kill you.

The diced/obrien potatoes have their place, but I agree those are not hash browns. Hash browns are shredded and crispy.

The McDs "hash browns" are good at times as well. White Castle hash browns are also good, but they kind of have a unique taste in that they taste very similar to their onion rings.

Big fan of the shredded hash browns. The frozen ones from Trader Joe's are pretty good if you don't want to try grating them yourself. Otherwise, there's pretty decent and cheap graters that are automatic so you don't cut your fingers trying to grate the potatoes the hard way. Red potatoes make the best hash browns. After you grate them, put them on several layers of paper towel and wring them out, drier the better. I use extra virgin olive oil for pan-frying them. I'll do peppers and onions on occasion. I've also used feta cheese with mediterranean herbs sprinkled on top or an aged cheddar.

Me too, and I'm avoiding them even though they are only five miles away. No way I trust that any Waffle House can avoid COVID.

As to the original question, I like both potato cakes (McDonald's, Arby's, Bojangles) as well as the Waffle House / diner style. On the latter, i am picky because shredding the potatoes was part of my summer job as a teenager. So i never make them at home, because i can't get them right without filling an entire dishwasher with equipment!

I do like the diced potato kinds as long as they are cooked right.

If they're diced and made with onions and green peppers AND they are cooked properly so they are crispy then they are pretty amazing O'Brien potatoes. The no longer there Lincoln Restaurant used to have great O'Brien Potatoes.

My dad makes the best pancakes and scrambled eggs with cheese. I'd love to go live with them again. Sunday mornings were great.

Hash browns are hard for me for some reason especially from scratch. O'brien/roasted I'm pretty good.
