When I was a kid, we had several "Greek Restaurants" in town. Which were basically places with an encyclopedic menu that covered cuisines from every corner of the world, and where you got soup and a bread basket with almost anything you ordered. There are fewer and fewer of those places these days.

I like Jets (Detroit-style) Pizza. It’s not my favorite type but once in a while it’s a nice variation. I like White Castle too but I wouldn’t rank them amongst my top hamburgers.

Obviously never met you. If someone would’ve given me 10-1 odds on you liking White Castle I would’ve taken the bet and lost a lot of money lol

Detroit pizza is only tolerable when the crust is actually cooked enough. The middle is as bad as Pizza Hut, though.

Tavern style with crunchy crust is the way to go. I do like deep dish every once in a while. Gotta be in the mood for it though.

As long as the crust isn't too puffy, Detroit Style can be awesome. Who doesn't like fried cheese?

I had only had it from a now closed place in Waukegan about 30 years ago. Only learned of it being called "Detroit Style" very recently.

The Italian Beef thing is ridiculous. The few places I have seen in WI its shitty, rubbery, thick slices of meat and is just downright awful. They put a Portillos in a few years ago so at least I can get that now.

You’re 100% correct.

Fortunately, my wife makes a great Italian beef.

Gotta order the giardiniera off Amazon tho.

They don't sell giardiniera in grocery stores up there?

What's a good giardinera to order off Amazon? I tried Marconi and it sucked.

It's somewhat similar to Rocky Racoco and I know you've been there since you live in Wisconsin.

I like Rocky’s as well but I wouldn’t describe it as being similar to Detroit style other than the shape.

I’m sure that’s true, which is why I like Jet’s. The 4 corner and 8 corner options assure crispy crust and fried cheese.

They always have the best cream of chicken with rice on Sundays. I usually like the omelettes too.

I grew up in Joliet and there was a commonly accepted belief that the “Greek Mafia” prevented non-Greeks from opening restaurants in the area. IDK if that was true but I can say with certainty that almost every restaurant I can recall was in fact Greek-owned (there were 2 Italian places but I’m not certain they were Italian owned).

I'd like to know too.

Mezzetta is pretty good for a large brand. Frankies deli in Lombard has a pretty good one. Bunyon is suppose to be good if you like it olive heavy.

They do, but the oil isn’t the same thickness if that makes sense.
