Just opened a bottle of Eagle Rare. Very nice and smooth.

How long do all of you envision this bourbon moment lasting? 20 years ago, bourbon was something old men drank, now it's trendy as hell. Meanwhile, vodka has fallen off the table. I'm not trying to start something, but legit asking. I'm more of a gin guy myself.

The trend is fine as long as it doesn't result in prices going through the roof.

There's always tequila....that's my first love anyway

I anticipate a snap back to clear liquor in the next two years.

Bourbon is already kind of expensive relative to other liquors. Scotch is probably more expensive, but other than that what's pricier?

LIke anything, you can overpay for any kind of liquor you want. I can buy a good bourbon for $40, which is the same as a good Tequila. that works for me.

Scotch is more than that....I'll take bourbon.

Fundamentally the issue is now the allocation of bourbon to retailers - things that weren't considered great in the past - Buffalo Trace, Blanton's, Eagle Rare etc.

That is driving up prices and will continue for a while.

For those who may be interested, Binny's has Weller for $30 (limit 1 bottle). There are certainly better Bourbon's our there but Weller is a solid sipper for the money and considering how hard it can be to find, it's worth picking up when you have the chance IMO.

Michter's is the most expensive we've gone and he didn't really like it.

The 15 and 20 year Pappy's are by far their best. The 23 I didn't care for and the 10 is nice but nothing more impressive than anything else I've had.

If you have a good relationship at your local store, you can get on their list for the allocated stuff.

We did this. We both liked the 15 year the best but I don't think we'd ever buy a bottle. It was great to try, food with it was good, and we got some free t shirts and hats so my husband was pleased. He loves free shit. We bought a bottle of untitled we'll see how that goes.

How did you find out about this? The link doesn’t have details. I’m sure my BIL would like to check it out in the future.

I shop, cater, eat there, and order from them a lot. We are friendly with a couple of the bartenders and servers. After talking about our bourbon trail trip they told me this was coming up and I get the promo emails. I knew the sign up day and time and it went quick. They paired each with a little dish. They do stuff like this periodically if you check the calendar.

The key to getting the 15 and 20 is to create those relationships at your local retailer and get on their list. One of good friends is with his local and in the last 4 years has been allowed to purchase one allocated bottle per year at MSRP - 15, 20, 23 and this year picked the William Larue Weller. Waiting on the 2022 selection from him.

Here's a funny thing as I peruse many Bourbon forums on Facebook. Woodman's in Rockford has been dropping a bottle or two of BTAC stuff the last few months. Might be two Lot B's on a random Wednesday and a couple 10 years three weeks later. If you are in the area, I would definitely stop in occasionally to look.

Buffalo Trace kind of let me down. But then again I was one of the only parents on a baseball trip. And I was having a catalytic converter problem in rural Kentucky. Go figure.

It's ok and fine for the price point. I prefer Woodford Reserve....especially the Double Oaked

My favorite is Jack Daniels Cinnamon Fire. Is that a good bourbon?

Not really IMO

For the Holidays, I get Birddog cinnamon whiskey that is better and generally less expensive.

One of my golf buddies is moving about 30 minutes east of Louisville in early 2023. Hoping to get down there for a spring golf trip and maybe check out a few distilleries.

I'm finishing the last of my Angel's Envy right now. I've had Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek, but am looking to try something different. What else should I check out that's at the price point of the three I just mentioned?

Four Roses single barrel is one of my favorites around that price point.

Purchased and tried the 1792 on your recommendation. It's definitely rougher than the Angel's Envy, but it was substantially cheaper and was the perfect thing to come home to, after a three mile hike in 37 degree weather.

Generally not a fan of Barton brands (1792, Kentucky Tavern, Very Old Barton, Kentucky Gentleman, Ten High) - 1792 full proof is worth a try especially if you like high proof bourbon but you can find some great alternatives to Angel's Envy with local producers like Starlight now.

I stopped by 1792 on the bourbon trail and my wife went overboard on the purchasing. I didn't like it all that much but it was ok. Drank half the bottle. Middle son had a few friends over in the basement to play video games. There was just a splash of liquid in the bottle the next day. Treating me like a freaking jerk by not just getting rid of the evidence entirely. I'm not the type of person who would leave just a little in the bottle.

I don't mind playing the game of being blissfully ignorant of some things. Don't put it in my face and ask me to avoid it.

How old is middle son? Not saying he did it, but jumping right into Bourbon as one of your first drinking experiments is pretty bold.

I just opened a Breckinridge Bourbon a friend gave me last week. Anybody had this before? Nothing special and reasonably priced, but seems decent enough. I suppose I’ll find out tomorrow.

When I was a teen we snuck a bottle of dry vermouth from a friend’s parent’s liquor cabinet. We didn’t know what it was and there can’t be a much worse tasting booze but we managed to consume it anyway.
