She doesn't care for Brandy so we went the Bourbon route.

For Old Fashioned...Rye is best. Brandy too sweet. Bourbon ok, but Rye is just perfect.

Or a high rye bourbon like Bulleit. That or Sazerac Rye is my choice for OF's

Bulleit is my go-to for Old-Fashioneds.

Buffalo Trace...$26.99 / bottle. Might be one of the better Bourbon's in that price range.

yes. thought it was a great ride in the country. you can also take small bus tours out of louisville. I think I've been to three, Woodford, Makers and 1792. I liked Makers the best. You can seal your own bottle with the wax and they had nice grounds.

Once you get off the expressway you can pretty much do a loop and run into a bunch of places, almost unexpectedly.

There are some nice borbon bars in louisville as well

I've done the locations closer to Lexington and Bardstown over the last five or six years - haven't done anything in Louisville or west of there. I'd suggest mixing in some of the large properties with some of the smaller ones. Two of Woodford, Buffalo Trace, and Makers. two smaller ones, in two days is a fun time.

The tasting at the end of Woodford was interesting as they provided different foods to taste with the Bourbon to show how if affected the flavor.

Buffalo Trace is sorta off on its own in the middle of the state. Plus they don't give you Pappy.

The funny thing is you are more likely to find Pappy or even Colonel Taylor at a good liquor store than at the actual manufacturer. It’s a cool place though from a historical perspective.

Yes, Buffalo Trace is a good somewhat historical tour, and you get to see some different parts of the state. I don't happen to like their bourbon for their price point, however.

went to Blaum Bros. on our Galena trip last week. first time i'd been to the distillery and it is freaking awesome. raspberry pi hooked up for entertainment, huge lounge area with comfy couch chairs. friendly bar staff. and a main coon cat that hangs out (and eats the mice i'm sure).

their stuff is good. the gin is nice and clean, strong, very good in a cocktail. the bourbon is also nice and smooth. i had a sazerac, old fashioned, and an awesomely named 50 shades of your mom (that had the gin).

we bought a bottle of the bourbon to make our own old fashioned's. and we have that blow torch thing to make the smokey ones. trying that tonight.

Why you drinking that overpriced American swill? Get you some Knappogue Castle or Green Spot. Don't really like Teeling, their process produces too much of a bourbon flavor. Writers Tears is pretty good, not strictly single malt but close enough. Knappogue's cask finish series is pricier, but still can be had for half the price of Kentucky Owl or Widow Jane. Binny's has single malt white label Irish whiskeys that are often excellent beyond their price.

I bought high west high country instead. It had mixed reviews. I might go back tomorrow for the other one. I can't decide.

I think there are cheaper and better options. Check out 4 Roses Single Barrel.

There are some options with nice gift boxes out now due to the Kentucky Derby. There was a rose shaped ice maker add on. Some have mint julep cups as well.

We've been all trained in college that Wild Turkey was crap, but the 101 series is one of the best values out there. I always have WT 101 on the bar. Similarly, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond is great at the price point.
